In the world of business and personal development, we often hear stories of success, failure, and redemption. But few are as compelling as Seth Sundberg's journey from NBA player to federal prison inmate to successful real estate entrepreneur. In our latest podcast episode, Seth shares his remarkable story of transformation and the valuable lessons he learned along the way.
Standing at seven feet tall, Seth Sundberg seemed destined for basketball success. After playing professionally for the Lakers and in various international leagues, he ventured into real estate and mortgage lending. However, his story took an unexpected turn in 2009 when he faced the consequences of what he describes as his own arrogance.
"I was a pretty arrogant guy," Seth admits candidly. "In that space of arrogance, in 2009, I figured I'd take on the IRS. And so I did, and I lost, and I ended up spending five years in federal prison for tax fraud."
What could have been the end of his story became a powerful catalyst for change. While incarcerated, Seth:
Read over 500 books
Started a protein bar business after discovering concerning food practices
Developed a deep understanding of the challenges faced by formerly incarcerated individuals
Refined his perspective on life, success, and purpose
"It was one of the worst things that's ever happened to me and my family," Seth reflects. "But it was also the thing that I needed. It ended up being one of the best things that could have happened to me on a human level."
Seth's definition of high performance reflects his journey and learned wisdom:
Clearly identify your goals
Break them down into manageable chunks
Do your best every day – not someone else's best, but YOUR best
Maintain consistency over time
"There's no sexy silver bullet," Seth explains. "It's just identifying the next step and doing it. You don't have to know what the end of the book looks like."
Today, Seth focuses on helping others enter the multifamily real estate space through his accelerator program. His approach emphasizes:
Education and understanding of market dynamics
The importance of proper underwriting
Value-add opportunities in B and C properties
The power of community and mentorship
Several key insights from our conversation stand out for business owners:
Decision-Making: "A decision is better than no decision. Even not making a decision is a decision to procrastinate."
Environmental Impact: "Environment plays such an important role in everything that we do, whether we recognize it consciously or subconsciously."
Continuous Learning: Seth emphasizes the importance of staying curious and always being willing to learn from others' experiences.
Faith and Business: The importance of aligning business decisions with personal values and larger purpose.
This conversation goes deep into:
The mindset required for high performance
Practical strategies for entering the multifamily real estate market
How to bounce back from significant setbacks
The role of faith and values in business decisions
Strategic decision-making processes
