Protect the Whistleblower—or Control the Narrative?
Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation Larry Gadon has called for the immediate transfer of whistleblower Ramil Lagony Madriga from Camp Bagong Diwa, citing fears for his safety.
According to Gadon, Madriga—who claims he served as a bagman linked to Vice President Sara Duterte—could be harmed or even killed inside detention if security is not tightened. He even warned that Madriga’s food must be closely monitored to prevent poisoning.
On the surface, the call sounds humanitarian.
Protect the witness. Secure his life. Follow due process.
But beneath the urgency lies a deeper concern—one that Filipinos have learned to recognize all too well:
Is this about protection… or positioning?
Madriga’s affidavit contains explosive allegations involving illegal campaign financing allegedly sourced from POGOs and drug-linked funds. Gadon framed the issue as one of national security, invoking fears of foreign influence—particularly China—through POGO operations.
Strong words. Heavy implications.
Yet still unanswered is the most important question:
Where is the independent verification?
In a country where whistleblowers are sometimes shielded, sometimes silenced, and sometimes sensationalized, the demand for transparency becomes critical. Moving a detainee does not validate a claim. Nor does fear replace evidence.
