When disaster struck during Tino and Uwan, many Filipinos clung to hope that their local officials would show up, lead, and protect their communities. But instead of leadership, what did the people get?

Silence. Empty chairs. Officials who fled.

Today, the DILG has confirmed that charges will be filed against local leaders who abandoned their posts in the middle of a crisis. These are not small mistakes—these are acts of betrayal. When leaders run away during storms, when they hide instead of serving, when they leave families to face floods alone… that is not public service; that is cowardice.

DILG Sec. Jonvic Remulla made it clear:
“Leaders who abandoned their people will face justice.”

This is more than accountability—it is a message to every public servant:

If you take the salary, you take the responsibility.
If you take the power, you take the burden.
If you abandon the people, the law will not abandon you.

And unlike other agencies na ginawang playground ang pondo ng bayan, the DILG move shows something rare under this administration—a rare moment of actual accountability. Too bad the same energy can’t be applied where the bigger corruption lies.

The people deserve leaders who stay.
Not leaders who vanish.

The people deserve service,
Not escapism.

The people deserve justice—
and now justice follows those who ran away.
