Medicine Use Review

Medicine Use Review is an NHS service that is available free of charge to patients suffering for certain long term conditions. It is usually conducted at the pharmacy every 12 months. In some cases where the pharmacist believes that it would be beneficial for you, it can be carried out in different conditions and interval.

The aim of an MUR is to explore and identify any issues you might have with taking your medication as prescribed, any side effects you might be experiencing and to answer any queries you might have. The pharmacist will go through all the medication that you are currently taking, ensuring that you know what each medication is for and with devices such as inhalers, to go through the correct technique to ensure that you get the most benefit out of your medication. Another key aspect of an MUR is to provide healthy living advice. This includes advice on healthy diet, weight management, alcohol consumption, smoking cessation advice, and exercise.

One of our pharmacists will carry out a review with you in a consultation room where you will have the opportunity to discuss any issues you might have. The pharmacist will provide you with information and advice and will refer you to the GP if required. Enquire today to find out if you qualify for this service. Minor Ailment Scheme

The minor ailment scheme is an NHS service that allows the pharmacy to supply advice and medication where appropriate by the pharmacy for a group of minor conditions. The service is free of charge for eligible patients. The pharmacy team will ask you a few questions to establish if you qualify for this service.

The aim of the service is to provide treatments for minor conditions without the need to see your GP or A&E. You don’t require an appointment for this service. You are required to be registered with a local GP in the same area as the pharmacy. If you are using this service for the first time, we will need to register you which can take 10-15 minutes. The pharmacist will ask a have a short consultation with you to establish the best course of treatment for you and to give you advice. In more serious cases, the pharmacist might refer you to the GP or the A&E as appropriate.

Local GP surgeries or NHS 111 might also refer you to the pharmacy for this service. This service aims to increase utilisation of community pharmacist skills by providing self care through the pharmacy. It also increases patient choice, convenience and access to treatment for minor ailments that do not require consultation with a doctor.

If you or someone you look after requires this service, please inquire at the pharmacy for the minor ailment scheme.

Repeat Dispensing

Repeat dispensing allows prescribers to issue a batch of prescription for a medication which needs to be taken by the patient regularly. This allows the pharmacy to dispense your prescription at regular intervals for the number of batch prescriptions provided by the prescriber. An NHS repeatable prescription needs to be dispensed for the first time within six months of being written and can then only be dispensed subsequently for up to a year from being written or until any expiry date specified by the prescriber, whichever is less.

The advantage for you as a patient is that you don’t have to request or visit your doctor every time your prescription medicine runs out. The pharmacy will keep a batch of prescription which you can collect at regular intervals. If there are any changes in your medication, you suffer any adverse effects or your condition is not sufficiently controlled by your medication, please speak to your pharmacist or contact your doctor.

The repeat dispensing can also be done now as an electronic prescription. The prescriber sends your repeat dispensing a prescription to your nominated pharmacy and they will be able to dispense in regular intervals just like from a paper prescription.

There are many advantages of repeat dispensing and electronic prescription service (EPS) if you get regular medication. Speak to a member of staff about repeat dispensing and electronic prescription service for more details.

Disposal of unwanted medicines

If you have unused/expired prescription medicines or medicines that you bought over the counter, just bring them to the pharmacy for a safe disposal. This is a free service available to the public. It is not safe to put unwanted/expired medicine in domestic bins.

Any medicine you return to the pharmacy cannot be used by the pharmacy again. It’s therefore very important that you don’t stockpile medication at home and only request medication that you need. Stockpiling is also dangerous as there is a possibility of mixing your new medicines with your old ones and it is also a safety risk to children and others who might take them. Every year over £300 million of NHS money is wasted by unused prescription medicines.

Each year, large quantities of unused and expired medications are dumped into bins or flushed down toilets and sinks. The effects on the environment and human health are unclear but the evidence is pointing to the presence of chemicals from prescriptions and over-the-counter medications in the soil, drinking water and the surrounding environment. It is very important that you return unwanted medicines to a local pharmacy for safe disposal.

Speak to a member of staff if you have any questions about the disposal of unwanted medicines.

Community Dosage Systems

The community dosage system is a service for those patients who take a large number of medications or who can’t remember to take their medications on time due to their conditions or circumstance. The pharmacy will put your medication in a weekly pack which is easy to follow, allowing better compliance and safe administration of medicines.

This service is being used by many of the elderly population to help manage complex medicine regimes. As a Pharmacy team, we understand how important it is to take medicine on time and not miss any doses which is why we can help organise weekly pill trays for those who require them and deliver them to the patients on a weekly basis. This will help prevent medicine wastage and overdosage in some patients.
