Social Starters is for anyone who suspects there's gotta be more to life - and wants to do something about it.
It's honest about why the world is in the mess it's in, and practical about what you - yes, you - can actually do from where you're standing right now.
Packed with real stories from people who've sparked change from inside organisations and out, plus the frameworks Andrea has refined working with 500+ changemakers and mid-senior professionals since 2014.
Is a practical roadmap for purpose-led leadership – and shows how purpose can be activated within organisations, through mentoring, volunteering and values-led projects.
And whether you're already running a project, or got an idea, Social Starters guides readers to transform their passion for social change into testing a project, business, or leadership pathway.
Described as “human, warm, insightful and surprisingly funny" it’s practical non-preachy, and thoughtful - without being heavy. It's grounded, generous, and refreshingly free of jargon.
SUCH a good book - I totally recommend! This book would make a fantastic birthday or Christmas gift for anyone you know who is trying to figure out 'what next' as it's so down to earth and easy to read that you can't help but keep turning the pages.

This is a wonderful book packed full of inspiring ideas and practical guides to help you find fulfilment in your work. The author has a great familiar tone which is all the more encouraging to support you on your journey. This book brings a shift you didn’t know you needed. I loved this book and can’t wait to put some of my ideas in practice.

Andrea's book is brilliant! Social Starters shares real stories of people who've launched purpose-driven projects. Andrea's six-stage framework for making it happen is a perfect blueprint!

On to chapter 3 now and breezing through. Lots of chord-striking resonance occurring! Lucy the Gen Y no less. Plus the “listening to your gut” - have had several episodic epiphanies over the years thanks to the body screaming out when things are misaligned with my values. Love all the references/quotes from other works too, suits the way my mind works and super digestible. Taking it internationally next, this is a perfect holiday read!

I've really enjoyed digesting Andrea's thoughts and insights. If you're looking for practical, succint advice on how to acknowledge the fear of (not) maximising your potential, overcome the inertia and 'analysis paralysis' that often comes with big life decisions, and get out there and do someting postive for the long-term future of our world that doesn't leave you thinking "is this it?" then go and read this book immediately!
Andrea Gamson clearly has the experience and expertise to lead you through this mission. Her advice is both realistic and tangible, paired with engaging personal stories along the way, making this a fresh and relatable read. I would recommend this book for anyone who is stuck in a rut and wants a practical yet purposeful guide on how to make a positive difference. This book will help so many keep going and believe in themselves and be compassionate for themselves!!! I’m so grateful for all of your shared wisdom and beautiful humorous writing and very valuable tools. Full of personality, wisdom and authenticity.

Andrea Gamson is a former media executive who swapped The Times & The Sunday Times for a life working with changemakers around the world. After becoming disillusioned about the media, she spent years in Kenya, India, Sri Lanka and Brazil supporting grassroots entrepreneurs tackling poverty and injustice - an experience that reshaped her entire approach to work, leadership and impact.
In 2014 she co-founded the award-winning _SocialStarters, where 500+ professionals from companies like Microsoft, KPMG, L’Oréal and Deloitte rediscovered purpose through real-world consulting assignments with social entrepreneurs. Today, Andrea leads Social Impact Support and its talent and leadership programme, Regenerous, helping organisations build cultures centred on purpose, resilience and meaningful contribution. She’s also a Director of NetShift CIC, supporting SMEs in the South West of the UK on their journey to net zero; and of Circlewise CIC, advancing human resilience through listening circles.
Currently studying a level 7 Diploma in Strategic Leadership, she has an MA in Regenerative Economics from Schumacher College, did the Regenerators journey in 2023, and has previously been awarded a fellowship from the RSA. She brings fifteen years working at the intersection of business, social innovation and personal transformation to her work. Andrea now champions the leaders and intrapreneurs shaping a more human, mission-driven future of work. She is currently embarking on a new leadership journey with Be More Pirate and is a member of the Chartered Management Institute.
Social Starters is the legacy project she took eight years to write - a practical, provocative guide for anyone ready to make changing the world their business.
