This week I want to cover a topic that explains the importance of a proper warm up.
Proper warm-ups can make or break your ability to have a good workout, remain injury free, and improve your speed/strength and efficiency.
The purpose of the warm-up is to reduce tension in the areas that are chronically tight while promoting muscle activation in the areas that are chronically weak.
That may seem simple, but that is where most people miss the boat with warm-ups.
There’s no need for long holds of stretches before we work out or run. We want to get in an out of stretch positions fairly quickly with the goal of promoting blood flow.
For example, you have a desk job. You sit all day and your muscles get tight in a predictable way. For most people that is going to include but not be limited to your hamstrings and your hip flexors.
Depending on what type of sport activities you do, chronically, weak muscles, might not be getting as much love as they need to.
For runners, the most commonly weak areas are the glutes, hips, and core.
The proper warm-up should address both of these things specifically, as well as using dynamic movements to prep your tissues for different types of movement.
Activating the proper muscle groups to contract well prior to exercise can help you tap into them during your activity. This obviously helps drastically with performance and resistance to injuries.
If you are curious about all that goes into proper warm-ups, feel free to click the link to my YouTube page where you will find a full series on this topic.
