Veterans’ Burial Benefits an Informal Guide
Introduction
This guide is designed to help veterans and their families understand and prepare for the burial benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It touches on the eligibility criteria, necessary documents, and steps to apply for these benefits, your Funeral Director will assist your family with this paperwork at the time of need, however, if you would like to complete the VA Form 40-10007: Application for Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility for Burial in a VA National Cemetery and have that in your "What to do File", so it is done before it is needed, you may.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for veterans’ burial benefits, the following conditions must be met:
Veterans must Not have received a dishonorable discharge.
Service Members who died on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty for training.
Spouses of a veteran.
U.S. Citizens Who Served in Allied Forces during wartime may be eligible.
National Guard and Reserve Members who meet certain conditions.
Required Documents
When applying for veterans’ burial benefits, you will need:
VA Form 40-10007: Application for Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility for Burial in a VA National Cemetery.
Proof of Military Service: Such as a DD Form 214.( Vet's discharge papers).
Death Certificate: To prove the date and cause of death.
Personal Information: Including the veteran’s Social Security number and service history.
Applying for Benefits
Gather Documents: Collect all necessary documents, including military service records and personal information.
Complete VA Form 40-10007: Fill out the application form for pre-need determination of eligibility.
Submit the Application: Send the completed form and supporting documents to the VA.
Await Determination: The VA will review the application and inform you of the eligibility decision.
Plan Accordingly: Once eligibility is confirmed, plan the burial according to the veteran’s wishes and VA guidelines.( at time of need-Funeral Director will assist) IF you wish it to be completed before hand it can be done with the proper VA paperwork.
Conclusion
Veterans’ burial benefits are a valuable resource for honoring the service of our nation’s heroes. By understanding the eligibility criteria and preparing the necessary documents, veterans and their families can ensure a dignified and respectful burial process. Many Vet's do not realize in most cases their Spouse can be laid to rest next to them in the National cemetery-no cost. Talk to Jen about this benefit!
