Course Overview

Dr. Bret Christensen proudly offers his Airway Health Solutions Pediatric Airway Orthodontics Mini Residency as a practicing orthodontist, diplomat of the ASBA (American Sleep and Breathing Academy) and one of five orthodontists to become Board Certified in Sleep Medicine.

His mission is to help orthodontists, general and pediatric dentists, integrate pediatric airway orthodontics into their practices to help
prevent the maladies soft tissue dysfunction and subsequent malocclusion has on children’s and ultimately adult’s airway/overall health.

Dr. Christensen brings his 30 years of orthodontic experience to offer peer-to-peer pediatric airway orthodontic training to help dental professionals help their pediatric patients breathe, sleep, and thrive!

Like other dental professionals, he did not learn this in school. It was only after his education, as a fully-practicing orthodontist, that he started noticing symptoms of sleep disordered breathing in family members and in himself. After treating thousands of patients, in-depth research, and attending many courses to broaden his education, he discovered that patients' lives, young and old, were being transformed.

Learning Objectives:

Diagnose, treatment plan and intercept pediatric sleep disorder breathing, nasal constriction
via orthodontic treatment protocols
Learn what records are needed to diagnose sleep disordered breathing
Diagnose tethered oral tissues and when to treat or refer for release
Understand the value of rhinometry yielding data-driven results and increased case acceptance
Select the appropriate expansion appliance based on case type
Develop effective communication skills for increased case acceptance

Bret Christensen, Orthodontist

Dr. Bret Christensen attended Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska, with a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1993. Christensen completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Louisville, Kentucky where he not only received his Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics, but also received a Master’s Degree in Oral Biology. In 2019, he received Diplomate status with the ASBA (American Sleep and Breathing Academy).

Christensen has been treating Sleep Disorder Breathing since becoming an orthodontist in 1999. For children, being trained in bio-progressive orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, he has been able to treat breathing disorders through growth and development. It is a matter of knowing what is causing the airway obstruction. Treatment could consist of expansion of the upper and/or lower jaws.
