Radical Empathy: The Key to Unlocking Raw, Authentic Performances
Great acting isn’t about faking emotions — it’s about discovering truth. Viola Davis teaches us one of the most powerful tools an actor can use: radical empathy.
When you stop judging your character and start understanding them, something shifts. Suddenly, the most flawed, messy, or even “unlikable” characters become human — and your performance becomes magnetic.
Here’s how to bring radical empathy into your craft:
1. Defend the Indefensible
Pick your character’s worst moment — the action you find most reprehensible.
Now, write a defense of it from their perspective.
Why did they make that choice?
What pain or fear drove them there?
What did they think they’d gain or protect?
By defending them, you step into their world without judgment.
2. Uncover Their Deepest Secret
Ask yourself:
“What is my character most terrified of people discovering?”
That secret — the thing they would do anything to hide — often drives every decision they make. When you know it, you know them.
3. See the World Through Their Eyes
Every character believes they are the hero of their own story.
Even in their darkest moments, they think they’re right.
Your job is not to agree with them but to understand them. When you embody this mindset, your performance stops being an act — it becomes truth.
Why Radical Empathy Works
When you bring empathy into your performance:
You stop “pretending” and start being.
Your reactions become raw and grounded.
The audience feels the humanity in your character — even when the story gets messy.
This is the kind of work that lingers in people’s minds long after the credits roll.
