Spring Into Better Dental Health: 7 Tips for the Whole Family This April

Spring: A Natural Reset for Your Family's Health Habits

There's something about spring that makes people want to reset — clean the house, get outside more, start fresh. Why not apply that same energy to your family's dental health?

At Lifetime Family Dental, April is one of our favorite months. The kids have spring break, families are back in rhythm after winter, and it's a great time to check in on the habits that protect your smiles all year long. Here are seven tips from Dr. Chris Godfrey to keep the whole family on track.

1. Replace Toothbrushes After Winter Illness Season

Cold and flu season takes a toll — on your body and your toothbrush. Bacteria and viruses can linger in bristles. If anyone in your household was sick this winter, spring is the time to swap everyone's toothbrush or brush head. Tip: toothbrushes should be replaced every 3 months anyway, so this is an easy habit to build into the seasonal change.

2. Restock Your Dental Essentials

Take a look at your bathroom and check your supplies: floss, toothpaste with fluoride, and a fresh brush for every family member. If the kids have been dodging their kids' flossers, try switching up the style — many children are more cooperative with floss picks or water flossers.

3. Book the "Easy" Appointment Before Summer Fills Up

May and June fill fast with end-of-school activities, sports, vacations, and graduations. April is the window to get your family's cleanings and exams scheduled before the calendar gets crazy. Preventive appointments caught early save time, money, and discomfort down the road.

4. Watch the Easter Candy — Then Brush

Easter candy season is real. We're not here to spoil the fun — just to remind you that sugar sticks around in the mouth and feeds the bacteria that cause cavities. Help younger kids brush after candy-heavy days, and make sure older kids and teens are brushing twice a day and for a full two minutes.

5. Think About Mouthguards for Spring Sports

Baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse — spring sports are in full swing. If your child plays a contact or ball sport, a properly fitted mouthguard is one of the best investments you can make in their dental health. Over-the-counter guards offer some protection, but a custom-fit mouthguard from Dr. Godfrey is significantly more effective. Ask us about it at your next visit.

6. Check Your Kids' Dental Development Milestones

Spring appointments are a great time to check in on how your child's teeth are coming in. Are baby teeth falling out on schedule? Are permanent teeth crowding? Are there any early orthodontic concerns? Catching these things at 7–10 years old often means far simpler treatment than waiting until the teens.

7. Make Hydration a Dental Habit

Warmer weather means more outdoor time — and more opportunity for dehydration. Dry mouth significantly increases cavity risk because saliva is your mouth's natural defense against bacteria. Encourage your family to carry water bottles and choose water over sports drinks whenever possible. Your teeth (and your whole body) will thank you.
