Hidden Mould and Water Damage in a Kitchen in Kirrawee, NSW

May 07, 20262 min read

A homeowner in Kirrawee contacted our team after discovering a leak under their kitchen sink. The wastepipe has a hidden leak causing water to enter below the cabinet and behind the kickboards. This created damp conditions and resulted in mould growth inside the cabinet and on the back wall behind the sink.

Kitchen Water Damage and Mould Removal

A mould containment with negative airflow and air filtering was created to perform the remedial works and prevent the spread of mould during works.

Our team attended the property to inspect the affected area and assess the extent of the moisture and mould contamination.

Inspection and Findings

During the inspection, it was confirmed that the wastepipe leak had allowed water to accumulate behind the kickboards below the sink. The trapped moisture created ideal conditions for mould to develop on the cabinet interior and the adjacent wall surfaces.

The affected area was primarily contained within the cabinet space under the sink and the wall directly behind it.

Based on the findings, mould remediation and containment measures were recommended to safely address the contamination before replacement kitchen works.

After removing the water damaged cabinetry we uncovered significant hidden mould growth

Remediation Works

To safely carry out the remediation process, our team established a plastic containment system with zip-door access to isolate the work area during the removal of cabinetry and treatment works.

An air filtration device was installed and operated to help manage air quality during the remediation process.

The water damaged cabinetry was removed and disposed of.

The affected zone was then treated to remove and remediate mould contamination caused by prolonged moisture exposure.

To assist with moisture reduction and drying, drying equipment including a dehumidifier and air mover fan was supplied and operated to help remove residual moisture from the affected area prior to cupboards being installed.

Kitchen Cabinet Mould Remidiation

After remediation works the area was left clean and mould free, ready to reinstate the kitchen cabinetry.

Why This Matters

Leaks beneath kitchen sinks often go unnoticed until visible mould appears. When water becomes trapped inside enclosed cabinetry, the lack of airflow can allow moisture to remain for extended periods, creating an ideal environment for mould growth.

Proper containment, mould treatment, and drying are important steps to help restore the area and reduce the risk of ongoing mould issues.

The Result

High Demand Restoration successfully completed mould remediation, containment, and drying works in the affected kitchen cabinet area. The treatment addressed mould growth caused by the wastepipe leak and helped prepare the area for the installation of the replacement kitchen.

Our team continues to assist homeowners across Sydney with professional mould remediation and water damage restoration services.
