Checking and Sealing your Windows and Doors

Seal the Deal: How to Check and Seal Windows and Doors

How to Check and Seal Windows and Doors for Enhanced Energy Efficiency 🪟🚪

As the seasons begin to change, ensuring your home is energy efficient becomes increasingly important. Unsealed windows and doors are common culprits for energy loss, leading to higher utility bills and less comfort. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to check and seal windows and doors to keep your home cozy and energy efficient.

Comfy home

Step 1: Identify Drafts

Begin by inspecting your windows and doors for drafts. On a breezy day, hold a lit candle or a piece of tissue near the edges of your windows and doors. If the flame flickers or the tissue moves, you likely have a draft. Pay special attention to areas where different materials meet, such as the window frame and the wall.

Step 2: Select the Right Sealant

Once you’ve identified the drafty areas, choose the appropriate sealant. For small gaps and cracks, caulking is an effective solution. Opt for a silicone-based caulk, which is more flexible and durable. For larger gaps, consider using weather stripping or foam sealant to provide a better barrier against air leaks.

Step 3: Apply the Sealant

  • Caulking: Clean the area around the draft to remove dust and debris. Cut the tip of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle for better precision. Apply a steady bead of caulk along the gap, then smooth it with a damp finger or a caulk finishing tool for a neat finish.

  • Weather Stripping: Measure the area that needs sealing and cut the weather stripping to length. Peel off the adhesive backing and press it firmly into place along the edges of windows and doors.

  • Foam Sealant: For larger gaps, spray foam sealant directly into the hole. Be cautious as foam expands significantly as it dries. Trim any excess once it has set.

Small Indoor Home Improvement Projects

As you seal up your home, consider tackling a few additional projects to make your space more comfortable before summer ends ☀️

  • Update Window Treatments: Swap out lightweight summer curtains for heavier, insulated ones that help retain warmth during cooler months.

  • Add Weather Stripping: Besides windows and doors, check attic hatches and basements for air leaks and add weather stripping as needed.

  • Install Draft Stoppers: Place draft stoppers along the bottom of doors to prevent cold air from sneaking in and warm air from escaping.

These small projects not only enhance your home’s energy efficiency but also prepare it for the cozy fall season ahead. By taking these steps, you’ll create a more comfortable environment while potentially saving on energy costs. Remember, a well-sealed home is a happy home!

Home Sweet Home

Taking the time to check and seal your windows and doors is a simple yet impactful way to enhance your home's energy efficiency. By tackling these drafts, you'll enjoy improved comfort and potentially lower energy bills as the seasons shift.
