Finding Steadiness in a Season of Stress

November 29, 20251 min read

“You can’t calm the storm, so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass.” -Brené Brown

The beginning of the Christmas season is often portrayed as magical lights, music, and celebration. But for many people, this time of year can amplify stress, expectations, and emotional pressure. You are not alone if this season feels more overwhelming than joyful.

In my work as a psychotherapist, I see the same pattern every year: people try to push themselves into “holiday mode” while ignoring their own emotional bandwidth. But the truth is, your well-being matters more than any polished tradition. And you have more power than you think to create a season that supports, rather than drains, you.

Here are three strategies to help you stay grounded as the holidays begin:

1. Honor Your Limits
You don’t have to attend every event or say yes to every request. Your nervous system needs space to breathe. Give yourself permission to protect your energy.

2. Notice Your Internal “Weather.”
Instead of judging your emotions, observe them. Are you tired? Anxious? Hopeful? Emotional awareness is the first step toward emotional freedom. You can’t navigate what you won’t acknowledge.

3. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Human beings don’t thrive on flawless decorations or orchestrated moments; we thrive on warmth, trust, and authenticity. Ask yourself: Who helps me feel safe? Who helps me feel seen? Invest there.

This season is not a test you must pass. It’s an opportunity to practice presence, honesty, and compassion, for yourself first, and then for others.

When life feels heavy, remember: nothing is permanent. Every emotion, every season, every challenge is part of your larger unfolding. And you are allowed to move through it at your own pace.

With care,
