City of Powell River Secures Significant Funding for Key Infrastructure Projects

Powell River, BC – The Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF) has provided more than $72,000 in funding last year to support two critical infrastructure projects at the Powell River Recreation Complex. This investment has allowed the City to make lasting improvements to our important community facility.

The cold-water line at the Recreation Complex reached the end of its useful life in 2024 and required replacement. The CCBF contributed over $47,000 towards this project in 2024, helping the City implement this long-term solution to aging infrastructure. This necessary upgrade will enhance the reliability and efficiency of the cold-water service for all users at the Recreation Complex.

In 2024, a further $25,000 of CCBF funding has been invested in the Recreation Complex for heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) controls and system upgrades. This is essential for mechanical equipment, including boilers, chillers, pumps, and fans, to maintain the required temperatures in a more cost effective manner.

“Community centres play a vital role in bringing people together, providing a safe space for social and recreational activities that encourage active lifestyles and strengthen community connections,” said the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “We are proud to have supported the upgrades to the Recreation Complex in Powell River, ensuring that patrons have a safe and accessible space to engage in these activities. We remain committed to investing in communities across British Columbia, promoting growth, well-being, and opportunities for all."

“Ensuring existing community amenities like the Powell River Recreation Complex remain open and available to people is part of our government’s work to keep communities across B.C. healthy and strong,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “The Province is proud to be collaborating with all levels of government to support projects that safe guard the vital resources that people rely and count on.”

“We are grateful for the support of the Government of Canada and Province of BC for providing this funding to help address local infrastructure priorities,” said Mayor Woznow. “These investments help to ensure a thriving future for Powell River which focuses on fostering a healthy community.”

The Canada Community-Building Fund provides predictable, long-term and stable funding to local governments for investment in infrastructure and capacity-building projects and is administered in British Columbia by the Union of BC Municipalities.
