Equity, Access, and MAT in Practice

Bridging the Gap: Equity, Access, and MAT in Practice presents a systems-level examination of inequities in substance use treatment access, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) implementation, and behavioral health infrastructure across underserved communities.

Drawing from public health data, county-level disparity analysis, lived experience, and field-based recovery work through Christ-Centered Ministries and the Los Angeles Regional Reentry Partnership (LARRP), the presentation examines the critical distinction between treatment availability and true accessibility.

The presentation explores how systemic barriers involve:

  • language access,

  • transportation,

  • cultural mismatch,

  • rigid intake structures,

  • trust deficits,

  • and fragmented care systems

continue to prevent vulnerable populations from entering and remaining in treatment despite expanded service availability.

Using comparative case studies from Marin County, Nevada County, and national treatment disparity trends, the work highlights how communities of color continue to experience disproportionate overdose harm while simultaneously facing reduced access to Medication Assisted Treatment and culturally responsive care.

The presentation integrates:

  • public health equity analysis,

  • overdose disparity research,

  • behavioral health systems reform,

  • peer navigation models,

  • faith-integrated recovery approaches,

  • community outreach strategies,

  • and trust-centered engagement frameworks designed to improve treatment retention and long-term recovery outcomes.

Grounded in both evidence-based research and lived experience, the work reframes addiction treatment not merely as a clinical intervention, but as a systems-access challenge requiring coordinated public health, community, and culturally responsive solutions.
