City of Powell River Announces Mid-Level Connector Construction to Begin in February
Powell River, BC – The City of Powell River is pleased to announce that construction of the Mid-Level Connector Multi-Use Pathway is currently scheduled to commence on February 18, 2025 (subject to any unforeseen circumstances).
The Mid-level Connector is a key component of the City's Active Transportation Network, as envisioned in the Sustainable Official Community Plan (SOCP, section H). This new 1.5-kilometre pathway will provide a safe and accessible route for people of all ages and abilities, linking the neighbourhoods of Westview and Townsite. The Connector is designed to encourage active transportation, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable community.
Site mobilization is expected to start on February 18, 2025, with tentative project completion by the end of April 2025 (subject to any unforeseen circumstances). There are currently no anticipated disruptions to traffic or services, but trails may periodically be closed along the route for public safety during construction. Project details and updates can be found on our engagement website at participatepr.
The Mid-level Connector, linking Brooks Secondary to the Recreation Complex (as shown on the accompanying map), will feature a compacted fine crush rock surface, ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience for users of all ages and abilities. Prioritizing safety and visibility, the project will also include provisions for lighting, with electrical conduits and light pole bases being installed. This lighting initiative responds directly to the feedback gathered during the project survey from Brooks students, showcasing the City’s commitment to incorporating community input.
"This project is consistent with Council’s strategic priorities and our Sustainable Official Community Plan, providing more opportunities for active recreation and well-being for our community,” said Mayor Ron Woznow.
The City of Powell River gratefully acknowledges joint funding in the amount of $1,616,502 from the governments of Canada and British Columbia, and the Powell River Community Forest for this project. The grant funding for the project is summarized as follows:
• $594,887 from the Powell River Community Forest Ltd.;
