Today, staying connected is often seen as a badge of honor. As the founder and CEO of a recruiting company, I’m well-acquainted with the pressures of being constantly connected and available. My role requires me, from what I have always believed, to be available to clients and my team at all times, which can be both exhilarating and exhausting. Recently, I had the chance to step away from this constant connectivity and embrace a “digital detox.” This experience was eye-opening, and I’m excited to share how it refreshed my leadership approach and offered valuable lessons for building a stronger team. You see, for the past 10 years I have never really had a vacation where I was able to shut it off. Can you relate? Fires and urgent emails like to happen in my world at the best times.
A digital detox means taking a break from using electronic devices or certain media, which can range from a few days to several months. This could involve avoiding activities like checking email, scrolling social media, text messaging, using smartphones or tablets.
With constant notifications and the pressure to respond quickly, social media and digital connectivity can easily lead to burnout. The signs of digital burnout are clear: feelings of stress, feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or disconnected from personal life. Recognizing these signs early is crucial. For me, they were indicators that it’s time to take a step back.
When I was invited to a digital detox mastermind in Montana, the "God's Country", I faced a daunting challenge. There were no bathrooms and, more challenging for me, no connection to the outside world. For three full business days, I had zero contact with my team. It was a stark contrast to my past experience, like closing deals on my honeymoon in the Amalfi Coast (a once in a lifetime trip) because I couldn’t and wouldn't disconnect.
During this time, I replaced my digital habits with outdoor activities and reflection. It was challenging, but it also provided a much-needed break from the constant stream of information. I overcame the initial discomfort by focusing on the simple pleasures and realizing the value of being present in the moment.
Taking a break from digital distractions can lead to significant improvements in life, according to many studies. During my detox, I experienced sharper focus. With fewer notifications and less screen time, I noticed I was more attentive to my surroundings and tasks. This aligns with research suggesting that reducing digital consumption can enhance concentration and overall productivity.
Another key benefit is reduced stress. Constant exposure to digital information can be overwhelming. By stepping away from these sources, I found a calmer and more balanced state of mind. Improved social interactions were another positive outcome. Without the distraction of digital devices, I was able to engage more meaningfully with those around me. This also created opportunities to build deeper connections, whether with family or new acquaintances.
Finally, a digital detox helps regain control over your time. Many of us check our smartphones reflexively, often without a genuine need. A break from this, allows you to reclaim your time and focus on what truly matters.
Upon returning, I was energized with fresh ideas and strategies. This detox allowed me to reconnect with my team and our mission with a new perspective. The time away reinforced the importance of having a well-structured team and processes in place, so the business can thrive even when I’m not constantly available.
One of the biggest lessons from my digital detox was realizing how crucial it is to have a reliable, autonomous team. By implementing the EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) framework, I was able to step away with confidence, knowing that our processes would keep running smoothly.
