Our brains thrive on clarity and control, which is why planning is such a powerful tool—especially around holiday spending! When we make a plan, the brain’s prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making and impulse control, is activated, giving us a stronger sense of control and direction. This activation reduces the need for last-minute decisions and helps us avoid impulsive purchases.
On the flip side, financial stress triggers our brain’s amygdala, the area associated with fight-or-flight responses. This stress mode can lead to impulsive spending, poor financial choices, and even physical symptoms like fatigue or irritability. By creating a financial plan, we allow our brain to feel calm and prepared, increasing dopamine levels (the “feel-good” neurotransmitter) every time we stick to our budget.
A holiday financial plan not only relieves stress but also gives the brain the structure it craves, making it easier to enjoy the season with peace of mind!
