Braley Care Homes was created from a father and son’s passion for quality assisted living in a home-like environment, spawned from their experience in the mental health field.
Chris and Dean Braley opened Braley Care Homes on March 29, 2005. Braley Care Homes expanded into Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and, memory care services in 2008. Chris Braley is the owner and administrator of Braley Care Homes and it remains the only free-standing Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory care facility in West Virginia. Our facility was built with dementia care in mind and is the ideal environment for someone with this disease. It is locked 24 hours per day and has a beautiful outdoor courtyard with a pastoral view, which is secure at all times.
Our memory care activities and behavior programming is geared toward meeting each individual’s needs, which helps keep their anxiety level down and reduces the risk of behavior issues.
Chris Braley has a bachelor’s and Master’s degree in social work and is an LICSW (licensed independent clinical social worker). Chris shares, “dementia is not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. My grandmother and father suffered from dementia, so I know the pain the families go through as they watch helplessly as their love one suffers. Our goal at Braley Care Homes is to tap into each resident’s unique qualities and help bring a calmness to both their life and their family’s life.

Braley Care Homes provide professional care in a
home-like environment, which is crucial to preserving our residents’ dignity and self-worth. We believe this can best be done in smaller environments, rather than large facilities. The home setting is the environment we choose to care for our loved ones. They can surround themselves with pictures and furniture for that complete home feeling. Our intimate, home-like atmosphere allows for individualized care and lasting relationships.

I have only great memories of the great care my husband received. Never heard an unkind word to anyone there. This care home facility is wonderful. Thank you, Mr. Braley, for all you do and your staff. God's blessing continue to be with you all.
Brenda B. L.
I’ve worked there and I’ve seen how the residents are treated. Staff love their jobs and you can tell. Owner is great with residents too. They do a wide variety of activities and even a pet dog.

Caring Is Our Business
In recent years, the field of memory care therapy has evolved significantly, embracing holistic approaches that cater to the complex needs of individuals with cognitive impairments. Holistic approaches in memory care therapy encompass a wide range of strategies that go beyond traditional medical interventions, focusing on enhancing overall well-being and quality of life. These approaches recognize the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, aiming to support not only cognitive function but also emotional and physical health. From personalized cognitive exercises and sensory stimulation techniques to art therapy and music therapy, holistic memory care emphasizes individualized care plans that address the unique preferences and abilities of each person. By integrating these diverse modalities, caregivers and healthcare professionals can create environments that promote engagement, reduce anxiety, and foster a sense of dignity and purpose for those living with memory loss. As research continues to highlight the benefits of holistic approaches in memory care, their role in enhancing the lives of individuals and their families becomes increasingly recognized and valued.
Memory care therapy, especially in the context of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, is a critical area of healthcare that aims not only to preserve cognitive function but also to enhance overall quality of life for patients. Holistic memory care therapy approaches this challenge by integrating various aspects of wellness and lifestyle into treatment strategies. Rather than focusing solely on cognitive exercises, holistic therapy recognizes the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, and physical health in maintaining and improving memory and cognitive abilities.
Holistic memory care therapy takes into account the entirety of an individual's well-being. It acknowledges that factors such as diet, exercise, stress management, social interaction, and mental stimulation all play crucial roles in cognitive health. By addressing these elements in a comprehensive manner, holistic therapy aims to optimize brain function and slow the progression of memory loss.
A balanced diet rich in nutrients is essential for brain health. Holistic memory care therapy emphasizes the role of nutrition in supporting cognitive function and includes personalized dietary plans that may incorporate antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other brain-boosting nutrients.
Regular physical activity not only improves cardiovascular health but also enhances brain function. Holistic therapy includes tailored exercise programs that cater to the mobility and fitness levels of individuals with memory impairments, promoting neuroplasticity and reducing the risk of cognitive decline.
Coping with memory loss can be emotionally challenging for both patients and their caregivers. Holistic memory care therapy integrates psychological support strategies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques, and support groups to address stress, anxiety, and depression, which can exacerbate cognitive symptoms.
While holistic therapy goes beyond traditional cognitive exercises, it still recognizes the importance of mental stimulation. Activities such as puzzles, memory games, and creative arts are incorporated into treatment plans to maintain cognitive abilities and promote brain resilience.
Art therapy has emerged as a powerful tool in promoting cognitive health and emotional well-being among individuals facing challenges such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. By tapping into the creative process, art therapy offers a unique avenue for expression, communication, and stimulation of cognitive functions. This holistic approach recognizes the therapeutic benefits of engaging in artistic activities, regardless of previous artistic experience or ability.
Art therapy utilizes various artistic mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and collage, to facilitate self-expression and emotional release. In the context of cognitive health, it focuses on enhancing cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, and problem-solving skills through creative engagement.
Engaging in artistic activities stimulates neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural connections and reorganize itself. This process is crucial in maintaining cognitive function and resilience, particularly in individuals with neurodegenerative conditions.
Creating art provides individuals with a non-verbal outlet to express emotions and cope with the challenges associated with cognitive decline. Art therapy encourages self-reflection, relaxation, and a sense of accomplishment, which can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression commonly experienced by patients and caregivers alike.
For individuals with cognitive impairments, art therapy serves as a means of communication when verbal abilities are compromised. Through artistic expression, patients can communicate their thoughts, feelings, and memories, fostering meaningful connections with caregivers, family members, and peers in group settings.
Artistic activities allow individuals to maintain a sense of identity and autonomy despite cognitive challenges. By focusing on creative strengths rather than limitations, art therapy promotes self-esteem and a positive self-image, empowering patients to embrace their artistic talents and achievements.
Introduce the concept of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) as a beneficial approach for individuals with memory loss or cognitive decline. Highlight how interactions with animals can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall well-being in memory care settings.
Therapeutic Benefits: Discuss how interactions with animals can stimulate memories, evoke positive emotions, and encourage social interaction among individuals in memory care.
Reduction of Stress: Explain how the presence of animals can lower stress levels and improve physiological indicators such as heart rate and blood pressure.
Enhanced Quality of Life: Share examples of how pets provide companionship, comfort, and a sense of purpose, contributing to a higher quality of life for individuals in memory care.
Types of Animal-Assisted Activities: Detail specific activities such as petting sessions, walks with dogs, or grooming sessions that are tailored to meet the cognitive and physical capabilities of residents.
Exploring holistic approaches to memory care therapy unveils a compassionate and effective way to support individuals with cognitive impairments. By integrating therapies such as art, music, and sensory stimulation into daily routines, we not only enhance quality of life but also foster a sense of purpose and connection. These holistic methods complement traditional medical treatments by addressing the emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of each resident’s life, promoting a more comprehensive and personalized approach to care.
At Braley Care Homes Inc in Hurricane, we are dedicated to implementing these holistic approaches with expertise and empathy. Our commitment to improving the lives of our residents extends to every aspect of our care, ensuring that each individual receives the support they need to thrive.
