Mayor

Richard Stewart

Richard has been a dedicated leader and lifelong resident of Coquitlam, committed to public service and community development. First elected to Coquitlam City Council in 2005, he has played a key role in shaping local policies and supporting economic and infrastructure growth.

Fluent in English and French, Richard previously served as the MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardville (2001-2005), where he focused on economic development, education, and Francophone affairs. He was also part of key government committees, including the Government Caucus Committee on the Economy and Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Education.

Beyond politics, Richard has been deeply involved in community organizations, including the

Coquitlam Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Maillardville Lions Club, and the Coquitlam Chamber of Commerce. He has also served on local advisory committees for housing, economic development, and city planning.

His experience extends to business and housing, having been the President of the Canadian Home Builders Association of B.C. and Chair of the National Housing Economic Research Council. He has worked on national and provincial building code committees and has operated his own government relations and communications business.

At the municipal level, Richard has chaired several City of Coquitlam committees and served on Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors, TransLink Mayors’ Council, and the COVID-19 Response Task Force.

A strong advocate for sustainability, housing, and transportation, Richard continues to provide strategic leadership as an ex-officio member of all City of Coquitlam Committees, ensuring the city remains a vibrant and thriving community.

Coquitlam City Council, led by Mayor Richard Stewart and eight Councillors, is responsible for guiding the city’s policies, services, and overall development. Their role is to ensure Coquitlam remains a thriving and well-managed community by making decisions on bylaws, infrastructure, planning, and local services. While the Council sets the vision, the City Manager and staff handle daily operations to keep the city running smoothly.

Committed to growth, inclusivity, and community well-being, the Council works to address residents' needs, support businesses, and enhance public services.

To ensure fair and ethical leadership, Coquitlam’s Council follows a Code of Conduct, adopted in June 2023. This framework promotes transparency, respect, and responsible governance, ensuring a positive and inclusive environment for decision-making.

The Code is based on five key principles:

Integrity – Acting with honesty and strong values.

Respect – Encouraging open discussions and valuing diverse opinions.

Accountability – Taking responsibility for actions and decisions.

Leadership – Inspiring trust and making informed choices.

Collaboration – Working together for a stronger Coquitlam.
