Despite this knowledge, they failed to warn consumers, particularly women, who used the powder for personal hygiene. Frequent use of talcum powder, particularly in the genital area, has been shown to increase the risk of developing these serious cancers.
According to research, including findings from the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer, regular use of talcum powder may increase a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer by 30-60%. Additionally, inhaling talcum powder particles has been associated with respiratory issues, such as mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer linked to asbestos exposure. Some talcum powders, including those sold by Johnson & Johnson, have been found to contain asbestos, a known carcinogen.
Talc, a naturally occurring mineral, shares a similar chemical structure with asbestos, and both can cause chronic inflammation, leading to cancerous tumors when ingested or inhaled over time.
