The Loneliness of the Businesspreneur

Being in business can be a very lonely place.

Do you know what I mean?

The sh1t hits the fan over something that’s gone wrong or that you’ve done to massively upset your biggest and best supplier.

You need to talk through this situation with someone to try and salvage the relationship or put a great solution in place, so you don’t lose the contract.

You look around the office but there is no one you trust or have that level of confidence in, or possibly no one at all if you’re a solopreneur. You look in your black book but there is no one you can confide in. You look in your telephone and but all you see is mates. There is no one who really understands what is going on with you and your business, that you can trust with your hopes and fears, and who can be that source of support and advice.

The realisation dawns that you’re in this on your own and there’s only you and this BIG PROBLEM.

It goes round and round in your head like a little Tasmanian Devil, never stopping, always jumping up and down for attention. Your anxiety goes through the roof.

You also know that you have a character to play as a leader. You are fully aware you can’t show weakness or panic. You must wear that “I’m calm and everything is in control look”. You’ve perfected it over the years.

But ALL you want to do is shout Sh1t! at the top of your voice. All you want is for a hand on the shoulder and someone to tell you they’ve got your back.

You know deep down if you keep on wearing the mask but not managing your anxiety, something is going to give. You also know that just talking to someone who you can trust would be a major step in relieving the anxiety and resolving the issue.

But who do you ask?

You may have a team around you and you may have a lot of love around you; however, you are the leader of your business and your team look to you to be the strong one and to give them direction.

Who can you talk to that you have full trust and confidence in?

Who can you talk to that knows your business and won’t blab about your fears, your anxiety, your thoughts, dreams and goals to anyone?

Who can you talk to that helps you clear your mind and get your thoughts out?

A couple of years ago I thought I had found that one person that I could speak to.

She gained my trust. I would open up my thoughts to her. But she let me down. The next thing I see and hear is that she has set herself up in competition and has all of a sudden started doing my idea.

I believed it was unique so how did she get my idea?

I thought it was a coincidence until it happened again.

This experience taught me to get a business coach which allowed me the freedom to discuss what my ideas, fears and plans were with someone who I could trust but also learn from. Someone who would hold what I told them safe, who would have my best interests at heart.

It also helped me understand that having the right people around you is a must. Those who have your back won’t even entertain blabbing about your ideas to the nation.

As humans, we are not designed to be on our own. We are designed to live in packs or tribes, to have other people around us and to have strength in numbers. This is why we crave company so much. But it has to be the right company.

Loneliness is bad for your health. It’s bad for you personally and socially, and it’s bad for you professionally. Yet as Businesspreneurs we are in the business of loneliness. Every step we take on the ladder of business success leads us further and further away from the team around us until we are up in the clouds with not another soul in sight. Who wants that? Not me!!

It doesn’t have to be that way though.

There are some really simple, practical steps you can take to kick loneliness into touch and ensure that you have awesome people around you that you can trust and rely on:

1 . Grow and nurture a community of like-minded people. Create your own pack, the kind of people you’d be happy to sit round the fire with after a busy day. The kind of people who get you and what it’s like to be a businesspreneur. The kind of people who will have your back and hold your hopes and dreams safe.

2 . Go networking to inspire you and help you become the best version of yourself. Learn from what you hear and who you meet. Build relationships, build connections, surround yourself with people who will help you to smash right out of that comfort zone.

3 . Celebrate your achievements every single time you reach a milestone or smash a goal, do something unexpected or push yourself out of your comfort zone. Create a success board so when you start feeling lonely, you can see all of your successes. It reminds you of how awesome you are and stops the negative feelings from kicking in.

4 . Join Influential Minds as an Action Taker family member and you will never feel lonely in your business. We have an absolutely fantastic community full of positive, determined people who have your back and are awesome to be around.
