To insist on coming to reserve duty even though you weren’t called up. To hold the tassels of your tallit even though you’re an atheist. To keep on hoping in spite of the atrocities. To be shocked by the clips (of war) and then shout AM YISRAEL CHAI. To save an entire village and to say it was nothing. To get married in wartime because sadness and joy are always intertwined. To be struck by a blow but always hold your head up high. To make restaurants kosher just to send food to the soldiers. To go out to fight even though you’ve just lost a child. To be on the home front but always on the front line. To break out in tears over people you don’t know. To feel that you are never alone. To watch your land burn and to feel that you have no other country. It is to know that no matter what, no matter who, you, us, we will win.”
