Isolation Can Make Us or Break Us

There is a reason why isolation is used in jails as a torture method. It can be used as a tool to break people.

Remember, as humans we are designed to be with other people, especially during times of stress, panic and anxiety.

We are NOT designed to be on our own.

When we are lonely, it increases levels of stress hormones in the body and leads to poor sleep, a compromised immune system and, in the elderly, a mental decline.

Some people will find themselves instantly in a rut which could lead them into a depression.

So how do we protect ourselves and our loved ones who need to go into isolation to protect everyone from the coronavirus?

Turn self isolation into a positive experience using the tips below…

1 . FIND PURPOSE

Help your loved ones find a purpose whilst they are in isolation. Keep in mind – what is their legacy and what would they like to be remembered for?

2 . GRATEFULNESS JOURNAL

Write a gratefulness journal. Choose 3 small things you are grateful for and 3 big things you are grateful for each day. Doing a gratefulness diary every day is the tactic to the journey of happiness

3 . “I AM” STATEMENTS

Repeat affirmations that focus on the self. For example, I am free, I am feeling fabulous and strong, I have a reason to live.

4 . VISUALISATION

Visualise what life will be like after this isolation period.

5 . GUIDED MEDITATION

Listen to meditation that helps you relax, gives you hope and allows you to enjoy yourself. There are a number of free meditation resources across Spotify, YouTube and many more.

6 . PREPARE ACTIVITIES

Create a list of activities you can do by yourself each day whilst you are on your own eg. A puzzle, playing on your phone, FaceTime, what to watch on Netflix etc.

7 . KEEP IN TOUCH

Join an online group that will ensure you touch base and speak to people.

8 . CREATE ONLINE COMMUNITIES

Hang out with like-minded people. Make use of online forums, FaceTime, Messenger, phone calls etc.

9 . GET ACTIVE

There are so many YouTube exercise videos that it is now easy to get active in the comfort of your own home. Exercise increases your endorphins which helps you feel good.

10 . DON’T GET TOO COMFORTABLE

Do not get too settled with an indoors lifestyle. As soon as you are allowed to get out, get out. Set goals and resist laziness.

11 . DON’T GIVE IN TO FEAR

Remember – FEAR = False Expectations Appearing Real. FEAR is an illusion.
