Dr. Alexis Gopal obtained her M.D. at Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine, doing her residency and chief residency at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. During her time at Albert Einstein, she received the Leo Davidoff Award for Teaching. She is board certified in Internal Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine, trained in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine, and Obesity Medicine certified through Columbia University School of Medicine and the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
After 23 years of clinical experience, Dr. Gopal became interested in integrative and functional forms of medicine, realizing that traditional medicine alone fell short in helping her patients with chronic illness, particularly obesity, psychological disorders, autoimmune disease, and that their underlying causes were not being addressed. Her own personal experiences as a chronically ill child helped shaped her philosophy and decision to pursue medical training and to provide compassionate care to patients in the way she would have liked her own family members to be treated.
She is a big fan of mysteries and feels like Internal Medicine is like solving a mystery or a puzzle. At the end of the day, she feels that using her skills in integrative/functional medicine to make a difference in in the lives of her patients is the best feeling in the world. Her message to patients is that medicine is a collaboration between patient and doctor, and they should have open communication, and expect the best care possible.
