What makes a good Jiu-Jitsu coach?

“What makes a good Jiu-Jitsu coach?”

December 12, 20251 min read

They say you can only teach about 10% of what you know. 😳

My Jiu-Jitsu didn’t really start to improve until I earned my Black Belt. 🥋

Now sure….I could bang and spar with the “Cool Kids”. But I had no idea what was happening most of the time. 😂

Just punching the trigger and scrapping. 💥

Now, as a coach I glean as much as I can from teachers and educators from all over. 🤔

I’ll listen to how guys like Coach Joe Breza talk about systems and principles.

I’ll glean aspects from Coach Jimmy Parks and his deep dive into eco training with Greg Sauders.

Or being able to zoom out and see the entire big picture in just 60 seconds like Coach Danny Alvarez Bjj does so well.

Outside of Jiu-Jitsu I’ll even listen to how men like Peterson, or JT communicate very complex concepts and break them down into simple digestible sentences. 😳

I admire charismatic speakers like Barrack Obama or ET to capture how they convey emotion through their speech. (Though I may not always agree with the message) 🎙️

And I’m not afraid to say “I’m not sure, I’m not really the best resource for that, but I know a guy who is”. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I know with certainty I’m an exponentially better coach than I was when we opened Metro Jiu-Jitsu in 2018.

But God willing I’m just a fraction of the coach and man I will be in 10, 20, 30 years from now.

See you on the mats,
