I Didn’t Realize My Self-Talk Had This Much Power
A few months ago, I had one of those realizations that stops you mid-stride and makes you say, out loud,
“Wait. WHAT?”
And once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it.
We’re often encouraged to speak kindly to ourselves — even as kindly as we speak to others. Lovely idea. Also… not always realistic when you’re tired, stressed, or it’s just a regular Tuesday.
Like many of you, I’ve worked hard to be more intentional about how I speak — and more importantly, how I think — about myself. That kindness muscle has taken practice. I’m not living in constant positivity, but I am gentler than I used to be.
Still, a question lingered in the background:
How much could this really matter?
Important? Yes.
Foundational? Absolutely.
But life-changing?
Then I remembered the work of Dr. Masaru Emoto and his book The Hidden Messages in Water. (You can find it here)
Years ago, Emoto photographed water crystals as they froze, after exposing the water to different influences — loving words, harsh criticism, classical music, heavy metal, gratitude, anger.
What happened next is the part that gets me every time.
Water exposed to love and appreciation formed stunning, symmetrical crystals.
Water exposed to criticism and negativity formed distorted, chaotic shapes.
And suddenly it hit me.
Oh my gosh.
That’s why what we say to ourselves matters so much.
If words can change the structure of water — and our bodies are mostly water — then our inner dialogue isn’t neutral. It’s not harmless. It’s creating the internal environment our system lives in.
No wonder we feel tense.
No wonder we feel worn down.
No wonder logic doesn’t fix it.
Our nervous system responds long before our rational mind ever shows up.
So here’s my question for you — asked with zero judgment:
How do you speak to yourself? About your body, your abilities, your worth?
This isn’t about fixing your thoughts or being “better.”
It’s about realizing you’re not broken.
If you’ve been feeling tight, heavy, or exhausted lately, this might be part of the picture — not because you’re doing anything wrong, but because your system has been listening closely.
Your body isn’t asking for perfection.
It’s asking for safety.
And you have more influence there than you’ve been led to believe.✨
