Between ancient walls and flowered cobblestone streets, Óbidos is one of the most charming and well-preserved villages in the country. Just 1 hour from Lisbon, this small medieval jewel seems frozen in time, offering an authentic journey to the Middle Ages — with castles, traditions and unique flavours.
Vila das Rainhas
Known as the “Town of Queens”, Óbidos owes its name to the tradition started by King Afonso II, who offered the village to his wife, Queen Urraca, as a wedding gift. Since then, several Portuguese queens have been its ladies, leaving their marks on the town’s history and heritage.

Óbidos Castle
Imposing and fascinating, Óbidos Castle dominates the landscape. Classified as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal, this 12th-century monument retains its original walls and towers, from which you can enjoy stunning views over the fields and the village. Today, the castle houses a historic inn, offering the experience of sleeping within centuries-old walls.
Tip: walk the wall path at sunset — it’s one of the most photogenic views in Portugal.

Rua Direita
The main artery of the village, Rua Direita leads from the town gate to the castle. Full of shops, galleries and craft stalls, it’s an invitation to stroll at leisure. The sweet aroma of ginja served in a chocolate cup guides visitors along this charming street.

Town Gate
The main entrance to the town is a true work of art. Decorated with 18th-century tiles depicting the Passion of Christ, the Porta da Vila is one of the most photographed sites in Óbidos and a symbol of Portuguese artistic refinement.

Church of Santa Maria
Located in the central square, the Church of Santa Maria impresses with its blue-and-white tile panels and the elegance of its Renaissance architecture. It was here, in 1441, that the wedding between King Afonso V and Queen Isabel was celebrated — when both were only 10 years old.

Medieval Walls
Walking along Óbidos’s walls is like stepping into the scene of a historical film. About 1.5 km long, the walls offer panoramic views over rooftops, churches and the Oeste countryside.

Medieval Market (Event)
Every year, Óbidos becomes a true historical stage during the Medieval Market. For a few weeks in summer, the village revives the spirit of the past with costumes, tournaments, performances and typical banquets.
Unmissable: the nighttime atmosphere with torches, music and traditional food is pure immersion into the Middle Ages.

Ginja de Óbidos
No visit is complete without trying the famous Ginja de Óbidos. Served in a small chocolate cup, this sweet cherry liqueur is a local icon and the perfect souvenir from your trip.

Santiago Bookshop
A bookshop inside a deconsecrated church — the Santiago Bookshop is one of the village’s most curious spaces. Among books and ancient stained-glass windows, it’s a place where the past and present meet in perfect harmony.

Óbidos Lagoon
Just a few minutes from the village, the Óbidos Lagoon is the largest lagoon system in Portugal. Ideal for peaceful strolls, birdwatching or gentle water sports such as paddle boarding or kayaking. It’s also a place to enjoy fresh seafood with a view of the Atlantic.

Beyond ginja, Óbidos delights the palate:
1. Artisan bread and cheeses
2. Cured sausages and Serrano ham
3. Traditional convent sweets such as trouxas de ovos and pastéis de feijão
Paired with wines from the Oeste region, they are the perfect complement to the medieval experience.

“We took the full-day tour to Sintra and Cascais and it was, without a doubt, the best part of our trip to Portugal! The comfort of the electric car made all the difference on the climbs and descents of the mountains. Luis Miguel is a true expert in Sintra — he knew exactly when to visit each palace to avoid queues and recommended the best spots for photos and a perfect lunch in Cascais. Booking the private tour in an electric car with Lisbon Booking Tours was, without a doubt, the best decision of our trip. Our guide, Luis Miguel Franco, was extremely knowledgeable, sharing fascinating historical context and very interesting local information. The vehicle was clean and comfortable — a great advantage for navigating the narrow streets of Alfama, Graça and Belem. We gained a genuine and personalized perspective of Lisbon. For an authentic, stress-free, high-quality experience, we highly recommend it!
