Graham Parish About Me

A lifetime behind the lens. A passion for helping people see what they are truly capable of.

I am Graham Parish, a photographer with more than 45 years of experience and someone who has spent a lifetime exploring the world with a camera.

My journey began in 1979, the first time I stepped into a college darkroom. Back then it was film, chemicals, enlargers, and the quiet magic of watching an image slowly appear on paper.

That moment shaped everything that followed.

Since then, my camera has traveled with me across Europe, Morocco, and thousands of everyday scenes. Over the decades I have built a vast archive of images. Each one taught me something about light, composition, patience, timing, and the stories that exist in every moment.

At some point along the way, I discovered something more important than photography itself. My real gift is helping people believe that they can take meaningful photographs too. I began teaching, and very quickly I realised how much I enjoyed the connection, the communication, and the atmosphere of a group learning together.

I taught structured six week photography courses, workshops, talks, holidays, personal mentoring sessions, and critique groups. I taught complete beginners who were terrified of touching their cameras. I taught hobbyists who wanted to improve their confidence. I watched students grow, find their voice, and create photographs they never thought they were capable of.

During the COVID period, when the world felt disconnected, I ran free online sessions every week. People returned again and again, not just for the learning, but for the sense of clarity, connection, and community that formed.

Through all of this, one truth has stayed with me.

Photography is not really about the camera. It is about the person holding it.

What I Believe

I do not teach photography the way many people do.

I do not overwhelm you with jargon or bury you in theory. My approach is simple.

Photography should be clear, not confusing.

Photography should be empowering, not intimidating.

Photography should help you believe in yourself, not doubt yourself.

The camera is not the hero. You are.

My role is to help you feel confident, capable, and excited every time you pick up your camera.

How I Teach

People often describe my teaching style as warm, human, simple, very clear and kind. I use stories, examples, and real photographs to help things make sense.

I ask questions, I involve the room, and I make sure everyone feels comfortable. If I lose my place, I simply say, "Where was I?" and we all laugh. When people feel relaxed, they learn faster.

One of my strongest skills is critique. I sometimes call it 'show and tell' - it seems kinder! I can look at a photograph and instantly see what works and what could be improved, and I explain it in a way that helps you understand the next step without ever feeling judged or embarrassed.

Every question is a good question.

Why I Do This

When someone goes from fear to confidence, when they say, "I can do this and I can do it well," something important shifts inside them. They begin to trust themselves. They begin to feel creative. They begin to enjoy learning. That change carries into other areas of life.

I have spent more than four decades photographing the world. Now I spend my time helping you photograph yours.
