Auto accidents are the leading cause of work-related injuries, accounting for more than 75 percent of all work-related injuries.
Chiropractic care can provide valuable treatment for many injuries sustained in auto accidents. According
to the North American Spine Society, nearly 700,000 auto accidents occur each year. In these auto
accidents, a person is struck from behind and thrown forward from their seat. This is called a whiplash
injury. When this happens, the neck may be strained or the spine may be injured. These injuries can cause
pain and discomfort in the neck, back, shoulders, arms and fingers.

The treatment of auto-related injuries depends on the type and severity of the injury. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic care can help with a number of auto-related injuries. These include:

Whiplash
Whiplash is the most common auto-related injury. This injury occurs when a person is thrown forward and their head turns violently to the side, back, or front. It's usually caused by some type of collision or impact in which the head jerks or is hit before being snapped back to an upright position. When this happens, the neck may be strained or the spine may be injured. The pain associated with whiplash can last anywhere from a few days to a few months and it may also involve headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, and
sleeplessness.

Headache and Concussion
Headaches and concussions are common symptoms of a whiplash injury. Chiropractic care can provide a number of treatments for these symptoms, including adjustments to the neck and back and massages.

Neck and Spine Injuries
If a person has neck or spine-related injuries, they may benefit from chiropractic treatment. The spinal cord is comprised of 31 vertebrae that are stacked on top of each other and cushioned by discs. These discs are made of cartilage and do not contain any nerves. When an individual is in a whiplash position, their head hits the back of the headrest. This can cause the vertebrae to move out of alignment and affect the disc between them. A chiropractor will use treatments like gentle adjustments, electric stimulation and cold laser therapy to help heal these injuries and relieve pain.

Extremity Injuries
An extremity injury is an injury to the body’s extremities. The fingers, hands, wrists, elbows and arms are all considered extremities.
Auto accidents can lead to extremity injuries such as fractures, sprains or dislocations.
Chiropractic care can help with these types of injuries by treating the joints or soft tissues that have been injured. Adjusting the joints or soft tissues will get them back into their proper alignment for optimum healing.
A chiropractor may also examine your arm and hand for potential nerve damage and/or disk damage in your neck that may be related to your injury. Additionally, your chiropractor will provide treatment for any muscle spasms you might have in your arm or hand.
