Planning & Legal
1. Do I need planning permission for a veranda or pergola?
Most projects fall under "Permitted Development." For listed buildings or properties in Conservation Areas like Wentworth or Epworth, we provide full consultation.
2. Are there height restrictions for garden structures?
Typically, structures under 2.5m near boundaries or 3–4m elsewhere are allowed. We custom-engineer our installations to comply with UK building regulations.
3. Will a pergola or awning be considered a “permanent extension”?
Awnings are temporary, while pergolas and verandas are semi-permanent. All structures are engineered to be “non-habitable,” simplifying legal requirements.
Retractable Awnings
1. How do your awnings handle South Yorkshire wind?
Our awnings are Class 2 or Class 3 wind-rated. Somfy® Eolis vibration sensors retract the awning automatically during strong winds.
2. Can the awning fabric stay out all year round?
The fabric stays protected in a full cassette when retracted. We recommend retracting during winter to prevent debris buildup.
3. What is the maximum size of a retractable awning?
Single units up to 7m wide with 4m projection are available. For larger terraces, we can couple units for seamless coverage.
4. Do you offer drop valances for low evening sun?
Yes, motorised vertical screens can be integrated into the front bar to block glare.
Pergolas (Bioclimatic & Retractable)
1. What makes a pergola “Bioclimatic”?
The louvered roof regulates the climate. Roof slats rotate to allow ventilation, trap heat, or fully close for a watertight seal.
2. Is the roof 100% watertight?
Yes. Fully closed louvres with internal guttering ensure water is directed through the posts.
3. Can a louvered pergola handle heavy snow?
Yes. Our aluminium systems are engineered with high snow-load ratings. Slightly opening louvres during extreme snow prevents excessive weight buildup.
4. Are the motors noisy?
Not at all. We use ultra-quiet Somfy® or Teleco motors for smooth and discreet operation.
5. Can I automate my pergola with smart home systems?
Absolutely. All Bioclimatic and motorised systems can integrate with Somfy® smart hubs for app or voice control.
Glass Verandas & Patio Roofs
1. Will a glass veranda make my house dark?
No. We use high-transparency safety glass, allowing natural light while offering protection from rain and UV.
2. Is polycarbonate better than glass?
Glass offers a premium look and quieter rain sound. Polycarbonate is lightweight, durable, and cost-effective with excellent UV protection.
3. How do I clean a glass veranda?
Verandas are pitched slightly so rain washes away most debris. For deeper cleaning, a standard telescopic brush works easily.
4. Can I add LED lighting or under-glass awnings?
Yes. Integrated LED spotlights and motorised under-glass awnings are available for comfort and style.
