Some friends of mine recently went through a program that studied the story of Daniel and how, when he and three friends were taken into captivity in Babylon.
In this Bible story told in Daniel 13:1-21, Daniel requested a special diet that was different from the “palace diet” they were offered as captives who were chosen to excel and become servants among the “royals” of his captors.
His request was to eat a diet consisting of simple, very basic and plain food… after much resistance he was given the opportunity to have a “test run” of the requested diet. Daniel and his friends were evaluated at the end of the “test run” diet and they were found to be 10 times more healthy and vibrant, strong and wise as any of their peers who were eating the food of the “royals.”
Over the years the simple diet they ate has been referred to as the “Daniel fast“ ~ This diet adopts “fasting” from all but the simplest, healthiest of ingredients… It teaches to eat in a way that my grandfather ate… He would often say we should “eat to live ~ don’t live to eat.“
The Daniel’ “diet / fast” was given to be a blessing for all… We today, can also gain the benefits of being more healthy, vibrant, strong and wise through the simple, very basic and plain food that God inspired Daniel to request for himself and his young Hebrew friends in captivity.
This morning I woke up to a Bible study of another kind of “God’s Fasting” in (Isaiah 58:1-14)…
God’s people had been complaining that He hadn’t seem to be impressed with their worship ceremonies of ritualistic prayers and rigorous fasting from food.
“...Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the LORD? “No, this is the kind of fasting I want:
Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
...Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your Godliness will lead you forward, and the Glory of the LORD will protect you from behind.
Then when you call, the LORD will answer; ‘Yes, I am here,’ He will quickly reply….
Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors!
Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes
Keep the Sabbath day Holy. Don’t pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the LORD’s Holy day. Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.
Then the LORD will be your delight… I will give you great honor and satisfy you…!”
- Isaiah 58:1-14 (NLT)
WOW…! That’s some kind of Promises!!! These are fasts worth looking into ~ and embracing!
