FAQs

How much does it cost to get a Management System in place?

Costs depend upon the size of your organization and the complexity of your processes, but all studies have shown that organizations make their outlay investment back, by reducing waste, improving processes and by the increase in business they can tender for. World-wide studies suggest the payback period is between 5–7 years, but here in Scotland, local studies suggest tangible benefits within 2 years.

How much paperwork is needed?

A properly designed system should not mean a lot of paperwork, but it may mean some extra. What Is needed is to record what is going well and what could go better, so there are records required. These could be paper based, possibly best if recording results of a production process on the shop floor, or computer based, if that is more appropriate.

What do we need to do to comply with health and safety legislation?

You need to have “arrangements'' in place for health and safety, and these must include a health and safety policy, and to have risk assessed your processes. If you have more than 5 employees, these need to be written down.

So as a small company, with fewer than 5 employees, I don’t have to have anything written?

While technically true, it would still be difficult to prove, in the unfortunate event of a serious accident, what arrangements you did have in place that you had taken all reasonable precautions if nothing was written.

How does ISO 9001:2015 differ from ISO 9001:2015?

The changes are rather significant but not overly complex to implement. There is a greater emphasis on Leadership, (see our Leadership course) and the introduction of the concept of Risk and how that is managed and also it has taken planning to a higher level looking at the Context of the Organization. A gap analysis (typically one or two days) would be able to show where the changes might impact your organization and give an action plan for transition.

Is it possible to get funding to improve our systems?

Funding is possible for some organizations, providing they can meet the eligibility criteria set by the funding bodies. Funding is never possible to put in place things that should have legally been in place previously. Funding bodies include Local Authorities and Scottish Enterprise.
