As loving pet parents, we all want our dogs, cats, and other furry companions to live long, healthy lives. At The Barn Door Veterinary Care, serving Coquitlam, the Tri-City areas, and beyond, we believe the key is simple: commit to regular pet wellness care.

By scheduling routine veterinary checkups, you can protect your pet from many common illnesses and detect health issues early—before they become serious. Preventive care isn’t just smart—it can add years of joy to your pet’s life.

🐾 Annual Preventive Care & Health Management for Pets

During every wellness exam, our experienced veterinarians perform a thorough nose-to-tail checkup, looking for any signs of concern. The following will be discussed during your visit:

  • 💉 Core and lifestyle-based pet vaccinations
  • 🪳 Parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, worms)
  • 🥗 Nutrition, supplements and weight management advice
  • 🦷 Dental health recommendations
  • 🧪 Additional pet health screenings as needed
When appropriate, the veterinarian may recommend additional pet health screenings or diagnostics. These tests allow us to detect underlying conditions early, giving your pet the best chance at a full recovery.

Please note: At the Barn Door, we require an annual preventative care exam in order to maintain a vet-client-patient-relationship.

Why Is a Bi-Annual (Every 6 Months) Exam Recommended for Senior Pets?

Why Pets are Considered Seniors at 7–8 Years Old

Pets age much faster than humans. By the time dogs and cats reach 7–8 years of age, they are entering a stage of life roughly comparable to a person in their late 50s or early 60s. At this point, normal aging changes begin to occur inside the body—even if your pet still seems energetic and happy on the outside.

As pets age, their organs (such as the heart, kidneys, liver, and joints) naturally become more vulnerable to wear and tear. Many age-related conditions develop slowly and silently, showing little to no outward signs at first. This is why senior pets often appear “fine” while underlying changes are already happening.

Bi-annual exams allow us to:

  • Detect health issues earlier, when they are most manageable
  • Monitor subtle changes in weight, mobility, dental health, and organ functione
  • Adjust nutrition, medications, or lifestyle recommendations as needs changee
  • Help maintain comfort, mobility, and quality of life as your pet agese

Early detection often means simpler treatment, lower costs, and better outcomes. These visits are not just about finding problems—they’re about keeping senior pets feeling their best for as long as possible.
