What's Most Important: From a Coffee Lover

Uncategorized Sep 30, 2021

I was drinking a cup of coffee this morning. I had poured the most perfect cup of coffee in my favorite orange cup, and I was getting ready to go, sit down on my couch and enjoy my coffee as I was preparing for my day. As I was walking past, I tripped over the cord from my computer and I mean a full-fledged trip. It wasn't one of those simple trips where you're able to gather yourself really quickly. This was a full-on trip where I felt like, surely, I was going to fall flat on my face!

What's funny and what my family found VERY funny was that I tripped, almost fell down, but at no point during that entire escapade did I drop ANY coffee. And I think it's hilarious because then my husband says, "We know what's important to her is that coffee." Not spilling one drop of coffee, and I was reminded, as I thought about that, that's not the first time that's happened. I run up the stairs in my home office almost every morning with a full cup of coffee and I never drop a bit of it. And so I begin to wonder, you know, how is it that this relates to the way you do business on a daily basis? And I begin to think about what's most important to you, because you're going to protect the things that are important to you.

I once had someone say to me, when I made the excuse and said I didn't have time to do whatever it is that they had asked me to do, a, "Well, you'll always find the time for the things that are most important to you." And now, as I'm kind of thinking through that, I know that it's true.

So if you've been in my community for any length of time, you've heard me talk about profit producing activities, and many times people will say, "Well I don't have time for that," or "I set aside the time and then I got busy doing other things," or "I just don't know how to incorporate it into my day." Well, I want you to begin to examine what is most important to you. Is it being busy, calling yourself a CEO, calling yourself a business owner? Because I've been there. I have no shame in talking about this because I know how we can sometimes get so caught up in saying that we're a business owner, saying that we run this amazing organization or whatever it might be, but struggling behind the scenes, not making enough revenue, struggling to pay our bills, or whatever it might be for you.

Some of those things can be changed if we would take the time to re-examine what's most important to us. I don't recommend it and I don't want anyone to feel like they need to do this, but I talked with a client or someone who was going to be a client earlier this morning, and she was telling me about how there were some pieces in her business that she just realized, she didn't want to do and they didn't light her up anymore. So,she had made a decision to sell that portion of her business and instead of doing the sales, she actually gave it over to someone else. She sold that part so she doesn't have to worry about it! I said to her that, if that's what makes you happy, then, great.

Sometimes we have to determine what's really important to us. I'm not saying sell it or give it away, but you might want to delegate it to someone to have it done. You might want to hire someone on your team to make sure that it's getting taken care of. But nevertheless, if we would get real with ourselves and determine what's most important to us, we'll see what we're really protecting. Are we protecting only our self-care time? Are we protecting our busyness? Are we protecting our excuses, or are we willing to protect the time that's required to do the work that's going to really drive sales?

So I'm going to ask you this question. Where do you really want to be? Do you really want to make a certain amount of money? So that you can give more, so that you can retire when you're ready, you can help pay for your children's college. You can have the flexibility to work from wherever you want to work. What is it to you? And what is most important? Meaning, what are you really protecting? And is it time for you to make a shift in what's important to you? Or maybe delegate it. So that you're not saying that you want to do something and showing something completely different. Just a thought for you to ponder.

I hope that this will cause you to start thinking about what's really going on in your business and maybe you can make the change. The interesting thing about this is, the key to the change is in your hand. So make that decision, re-evaluate and decide what's most important to you
