"This camp truly helped me grow"
"I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful
experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the
most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with
Better Steps Life Skills."
- Pia (Season 4)

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future"
At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team.
Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and
helped me take the first steps toward my future.
- Christian

"I'm very thankful for everything"
I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every
year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that
I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps.
- Jencarlos (Seasons 1 – 4)

Families play a vital role in supporting career development for loved ones with disabilities. Learn practical ways to encourage independence and success.
Families are often the first and strongest support system for individuals with disabilities. From early education to adulthood, family involvement plays a powerful role in shaping confidence, independence, and future opportunities — especially when it comes to career development.
Supporting a loved one’s career journey doesn’t mean doing everything for them. It means encouraging growth, fostering independence, and connecting them to the right resources.
Career development begins long before a job offer. It starts with belief, encouragement, and exposure to opportunities. Families help lay this foundation by:
Encouraging self-confidence
Reinforcing independence
Supporting goal-setting
Advocating when necessary
When families believe in a loved one’s potential, it often becomes the driving force behind success.
One of the most important ways families can support career development is by promoting independence in everyday life.
This includes:
Encouraging decision-making
Teaching responsibility and routines
Allowing room for mistakes and learning
Supporting self-advocacy
Independence builds confidence — and confidence carries into school, work, and social environments.
Every individual has unique talents. Families are in a great position to observe interests and abilities that may translate into career opportunities.
Consider:
What activities bring joy or focus?
What tasks come naturally?
What environments feel comfortable or motivating?
Focusing on strengths helps individuals pursue careers that align with their abilities and passions.
Career readiness often starts with life skills. Families can help reinforce skills such as:
Time management
Communication
Personal responsibility
Problem-solving
Simple daily routines — like managing schedules or practicing conversations — help prepare individuals for workplace expectations.
Families don’t have to navigate the journey alone. Community-based programs like Better Steps Life Skills Center Inc. offer structured support that complements family efforts.
These programs provide:
Employment readiness training
Job placement support
Life skills development
Ongoing coaching and guidance
Partnering with professionals ensures individuals receive comprehensive support tailored to their needs.
It’s natural for families to want to protect their loved ones — but growth often happens outside comfort zones. Encouraging independence while offering guidance helps individuals develop resilience and confidence.
Celebrate progress, no matter how small. Every step forward matters.
Career development is not a solo journey — it’s a partnership between individuals, families, and support organizations. With encouragement, patience, and the right resources, individuals with disabilities can pursue meaningful careers and fulfilling lives.
At Better Steps Life Skills Center Inc., families are valued partners in the journey toward empowerment and success.
If your loved one is exploring employment or independence, support is available.
