Our Heritage

A Building of Distinction

112 South 2nd Street, Elkhart — Circa 1905

Original Interior — Oak Woodwork & Stained Glass

Architectural Significance

Located at 112 South 2nd Street, this distinctive building was constructed in 1905. Its broad horizontal form, rich dark brickwork, limestone accents, and balanced symmetry reflect the signature style of architect E. Hill Turnock.

Turnock, a London-born architect who trained under William LeBaron Jenney in Chicago, returned to Elkhart in 1907 and went on to shape much of the city's architectural identity. His work includes notable public buildings, churches, factories, and private residences such as the Ruthmere Mansion.

Though original interior records are limited, Turnock's buildings are known for their craftsmanship, featuring heavy oak woodwork, hardwood floors, ornamental fireplaces, and stained glass details that speak to the building's enduring character.

"A testament to the artistry and vision of early 20th-century craftsmanship"

Historical Use & Transition

Originally constructed as the home of Kane Lodge No. 183, a Masonic lodge founded in 1855, the building served as a central gathering place for generations. Early 20th-century photographs capture lodge members in formal attire, highlighting the building's role as a hub of community life.

As the lodge later relocated, the building entered a new chapter. Today, the historic structure has been thoughtfully transformed into the Elkhart 112 Club, also known as Turnock Hall serving as a vibrant event venue while preserving its architectural integrity.

The space now plays a key role in downtown Elkhart's revitalization, honoring its past while embracing modern use.
