Dental, Vision and Hearing
Navigating Dental, Vision, and Hearing Coverage in Medicare with Diamond Financial Group
Medicare’s Dental Coverage
Original Medicare’s dental coverage is quite minimal. While Medicare Part B might cover certain unique dental services, these are the exception rather than the rule. Such instances might include:
Oral exams before specific organ transplants.
Dental services necessary due to an accident.
Specific jaw reconstruction cases.
Necessary dental exams before certain surgical procedures.
Unfortunately, for more common dental procedures like cleanings, fillings, or dentures, Medicare offers no coverage.
Vision Services Under Medicare
Similarly, Medicare’s vision coverage is limited to specific, less routine services. Routine eye exams, or eye refractions, are typically not covered unless you have a high risk for certain conditions. Medicare does cover yearly glaucoma screenings for high-risk individuals and diagnostic testing and treatment for conditions like macular degeneration.
Eyeglasses and contact lenses are usually not covered, except following cataract surgery that implants an intraocular lens. Eye prostheses are covered under certain conditions with replacements every five years, all under Part B, subject to the deductible .
Hearing Services and Medicare
For hearing services, Medicare covers medically necessary exams but not hearing aids or fitting exams. If you’ve been treated with a surgically-implanted hearing device, Medicare will cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams without a referral. Securing Comprehensive Coverage
Securing Comprehensive Coverage
Despite these limitations, there are ways to secure more comprehensive dental, vision, and hearing coverage:
Medicare Advantage Plans
Often advertised for their extra benefits, Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans must cover everything included in Original Medicare but often extend coverage to include dental, vision, and hearing services. These plans can be a valuable option for more inclusive care.
Dental, Vision, Hearing (DVH) Insurance Plans
Alternatively, you could consider a standalone DVH insurance plan. These plans are specifically designed to cover gaps in Original Medicare, often bundling dental, vision, and hearing benefits into a single policy.
