Jesus instructed His followers to share the message of the Gospel with the world and to baptize all people, emphasizing that Baptism is essential for salvation (see John 3:5). In response to this divine command, the Church invites individuals to join in communion with Christ through Baptism. This sacrament marks the beginning of a journey of faith. For those baptized, including infants, it involves a commitment to a holy life, supported by the Christian community.
Baptism represents a spiritual rebirth into new life with Christ. As the Church teaches, it is necessary for salvation and serves as the entrance into the Church, the Body of Christ. This is affirmed in the Catechism: “Baptism is birth into the new life in Christ... as is the Church herself, which we enter by Baptism” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1277).
The meaning and grace of Baptism are expressed in the rites of its celebration. The sacrament lays the foundation of Christian life, providing access to the other sacraments. It frees the baptized from sin and grants spiritual rebirth as a child of God. Through Baptism, a person becomes a member of Christ, is united with the Church, and takes part in her mission. The Catechism describes Baptism as “the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213).
The effects of Baptism, often referred to as baptismal grace, encompass the forgiveness of original sin and personal sins, a new life as an adopted child of God, and incorporation into the Church as a member of Christ’s Body. The baptized person also shares in the priesthood of Christ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1279).
The role of a godparent is central to Baptism. Together with the parents, the godparent presents the child for baptism and helps guide the baptized person in living a faithful Christian life. The Church outlines specific requirements for godparents:
Only one godparent is required, but there can be two (one male and one female). Godparents must be at least 16 years old, baptized Catholics who have received First Communion and Confirmation, and practicing their faith. A good godparent is chosen for their example of faith and dedication to supporting the child’s Catholic upbringing, not solely based on familial or social connections. Non-Catholics cannot serve as godparents but may act as official witnesses to the baptism. Only Catholic godparents are recorded in the Church’s official registry and certificate.
These guidelines help ensure that the godparent fulfills their role as a spiritual guide and model for the baptized individual.

We congratulate you on the birth of your child and warmly welcome them into our Parish Community. Baptism is a joyous occasion for your family and for the Church as we celebrate the beginning of your child’s faith journey.
