Fear-based stress is not a life sentence. I can assure you.
In 2007, with 2 toddlers by my side, I was diagnosed with a life threatening illness. "Disabled" became my new identity. Frequently bed bound and surrounded with devices and mobility aides, I was deeply depressed and entrenched in fear.
I imagined all the ways I was going to die as a young mother.
My #1 goal was to shift my stress response and be a better parent.
Fast forward to 2011, healing became my #1 priority. After a divorce, I needed to show up each day as the best parent possible. I needed to do it alone and I was terrified. Once again, the pattern of symptoms worsening during emotionally or physically stressful periods became evident.
I learned how the Autonomic Nervous System naturally reacts to fear, stress, worry, and doubt. These stressors trigger a "Fight or Flight" reaction (aka sympathetic response). "Fight or Flight" evolved as a survival mechanism (think bear attack) as humans evolved. While the sympathetic response can protect us - it's equally unpleasant when activated without a major threat. Physical symptoms include heart racing, sweating, nervousness, confusion, disorientation, and adrenaline surges.
With the right tools and mindset, you can shift to "Rest and Digest" (parasympathetic response). Benefits include feeling relaxed, focused, and clear-minded.
Your Autonomic Nervous System experiences real life stressors which risk triggering the "Fight and Flight" response. The key lies in retraining your brain to recognize the onset and access balance immediately. Over time, your brain can retrain the pattern of response.
