"It's Just Bursitis" - Why Your Hip Pain Isn't Going Away

One of the most common things we hear in clinic is this:

“I’ve been told it’s bursitis in my hip.”

Or:

“My hip is just inflamed.”
“It’s a bit of wear and tear.”
“I just need to rest it.”

And for a lot of people, that’s where it stops.

They’re given a label.

Maybe some rest.
Maybe some anti-inflammatories.
Maybe a few generic exercises.

But the pain keeps coming back.

What Is Hip Bursitis?

In simple terms, bursitis means irritation of a small fluid-filled sac (a bursa) that helps reduce friction around the hip.

When it becomes irritated, it can cause:

  • Pain on the outside of the hip

  • Pain lying on that side

  • Discomfort walking or going up stairs

  • Pain that lingers rather than fully settles

But here’s the important part.

The bursa is rarely the real problem.

It’s usually the result of something else.

Why It Keeps Coming Back

Most people are told to rest it or stretch it.

And sometimes that helps… for a while.

But if the underlying issue isn’t addressed, the irritation returns.

That’s why people get stuck in the cycle:

Pain, Rest, Feels a bit better, Back to activity, Pain returns.

The question we always ask is:

Why did the bursa become irritated in the first place?

It’s Often a Load Problem, Not Just Inflammation

The hip is designed to handle load.

Walking, standing, stairs, exercise.

But when certain muscles around the hip are not doing their job properly, other areas take over.

Over time, this increases stress on the outside of the hip.

That’s when the irritation begins.

So the issue is often not just inflammation.

It’s how the hip is handling movement and load.

Why Rest Alone Doesn’t Fix It

Rest can calm symptoms temporarily.

But it doesn’t build strength.

It doesn’t improve how your hip moves.

And it doesn’t prepare your body to handle activity again.

So when you return to normal life, the same stress is still there.

And the pain returns.

This Is Where Proper Rehabilitation Matters

At ARC Rehabilitation & Pilates in Ballina, we don’t just label it as bursitis and leave it there.

We look deeper.

We assess:

How your hip is moving
What movements aggravate your pain
What your strength and control are like
What is actually causing the overload

From there, we build a structured plan.

Not random exercises.

Not one-size-fits-all advice.

But a progressive rehabilitation approach designed around you.

Building Strength and Confidence Again

A big part of recovery is gradually reintroducing load in the right way.

That might involve:

Targeted strengthening
Improving movement patterns
Building tolerance to walking, stairs, and daily activity

And for many of our clients, progressing into our Reformer Pilates classes plays a key role.

Therapist-led. Small group. Structured.

It allows you to build strength, mobility and confidence without flaring things up.

The Bottom Line

Hip bursitis is often not just “bad luck” or simple inflammation.

It is usually a sign that something is not working properly around the hip.

And until that is addressed, the pain often keeps coming back.

The good news?

With the right approach, it is very manageable.

What This Means for You

If you have been dealing with hip pain or bursitis that keeps returning…

If rest and stretching only give short-term relief…

If you feel unsure what to do next…

There is a better way to approach it.

At ARC Rehabilitation & Pilates in Ballina, we take the time to understand the real cause of your pain and guide you through a structured plan to get you back moving confidently.
