🔥 Turn Down the Heat: Summer Running Tips

🔥 Turn Down the Heat: Summer Running Tips

June 27, 20243 min read

Staying motivated as the heat cranks up in the summer can be very difficult. A lot of times it pushes you to change your training or even skip it all together. The same is true with what happens to your normal mobility and strength routines. If you’re not training as hard or specifically for a goal, often times the supplementary work can slip as well.

However, with the right strategies, you can stay motivated and active all summer long. Here are some tips to keep you moving:

Adjust Your Schedule

Beat the heat by timing your workouts to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Early mornings or late evenings are ideal times to exercise when the temperature is cooler. Not only is it more comfortable, but it's also a peaceful way to start or end your day.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is crucial during the summer. Make sure to drink plenty of water and the appropriate electrolytes before, during, and after your workout to keep your body functioning well and to prevent heat exhaustion. Carrying a water bottle and taking small sips throughout the day can also help you stay hydrated.

Dress Appropriately

Wear lightweight, breathable, and light-colored clothing to help keep your body cool during workouts. Use of moisture-wicking fabric and absolutely no cotton also make a significant difference in how you feel while exercising. As it gets hot, less is more!

Find the Shade

If you’re an outdoor exercise enthusiast, it is important to either pick the proper time of day to exercise or if possible, pick the shady places. I like to use a combination of both if possible and op for early morning trails in the shade as a cooler alternative to open roads.

Indoor Alternatives

I would be remiss if I didn’t state that I hate running on the treadmill or any other indoor cardio machines. With that being said, some days, and especially during the high heat of the day, it may be your best choice you have a long workout planned. The summer is a great time to work on indoor strength training goals also.

Set Short-Term Goals

Long-term goals are great, but short-term goals can give you quick wins and keep your motivation high. Set goals that are achievable within a few weeks to keep your spirits and motivation up throughout the summer. Pick a short race or event each month to keep you honest.

Training Programs

Everything is more fun with a friend, including working out and running. Joining a training group can help you stay accountable and motivated. Plus, it's a great way to socialize while getting fit.

Listen to Your Body

The summer heat can be taxing on your body. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or overly fatigued, take a break. Safety should always come first.

Staying active in the summer doesn't have to be a chore. With these tips, you can maintain your fitness routine and enjoy the season to its fullest. Remember, consistency is key to achieving your fitness goals, and every step you take this summer is a step toward a healthier you.
