Most people think their biggest challenge is motivation.
Or time.
Or willpower.
But after coaching thousands of adults across Brisbane, I’ve learned something different:
The real challenge is identity.
Most people are trying to “get fit,” but they haven’t yet become the kind of person who trains consistently.
And that one shift changes everything.
When you rely on motivation, everything becomes fragile.
Busy day at work → training drops.
Kids sick → training drops.
Christmas season → training drops.
A night of bad sleep → training drops.
Because motivation is temporary.
But identity?
Identity is stable.
In Atomic Habits, James Clear says:
“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”
If you want long-term success, don’t chase the outcome.
Build the identity that naturally produces the outcome.
“My goal is to get fit” → outcome-based
“I am someone who trains consistently” → identity-based
Identity-based athletes don’t rely on perfect conditions.
They show up because it’s who they are... even when it’s inconvenient.
And here’s the best part:
You don’t have to earn the identity first.
You claim it, then prove it to yourself through small actions.
Ask yourself this one question each morning:
That’s it.
Simple. Powerful. Repeatable.
It immediately aligns your behaviour with your identity.
For example:
The healthier version of you would pack gym clothes the night before.
The healthier version of you would walk 10 minutes instead of scrolling.
The healthier version of you would book your training session now, not later.
The healthier version of you would eat a real lunch instead of grazing.
You don’t have to overhaul your life.
You just have to start voting for the person you want to be.
One of our members told me recently:
“When I stopped trying to ‘get fit’ and started trying to be a fit person… everything became easier.”
That’s the magic of identity.
You stop negotiating with yourself.
You stop needing motivation.
You stop overthinking.
You just act in alignment with who you’ve decided you are.
Not perfect weeks.
Not 6-session streaks.
Not hitting your macros flawlessly.
Small, consistent actions.
A walk.
A stretch.
A planned training session.
A slightly better meal.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You just have to cast votes.
That’s exactly what we do.
At CrossFit Desire (Northgate) and Gym Cartel (Albion), we help busy adults become consistent... not through guilt, not through extreme challenges, but through simple habits and supportive coaching.
