What you need to know for the CrossFit Open

What you need to know for the CrossFit Open

February 26, 20262 min read

The CrossFit Open isn’t just three workouts.

At CrossFit Desire, it’s structured, organised, loud, competitive, and community-driven... without losing the integrity of movement standards.

Here’s exactly how we roll it out each week.

1️⃣ Friday 6:00AM - Workout Release

At 6am Friday, the Open workout is released globally.

Shortly after, we publish:

  • A short breakdown video

  • Movement standards and important notes

  • A suggested warm-up for Friday Night Lights

We want you informed before you walk in.

2️⃣ Friday Night Lights Setup

From 3:30pm:

  • Floors taped

  • Equipment laid out

  • Scoresheets printed

  • Heat grid ready on the whiteboard

The first heat starts at 4:30pm (no earlier).

FNL runs at both locations (unless Wall Balls appear).
If they do, we’ll consolidate to Albion due to logistics.

3️⃣ The Heat System

When you arrive:

  • Write your name into an open heat slot on the whiteboard

  • Note your lane

  • Warm yourself up in the warm up area

  • KNOW the workout

  • Be ready at your start time

Athletes are responsible for being prepared.

4️⃣ Judges & Standards

Every athlete must organise a judge.

Judges enforce movement standards.

The Open is:

  • Fun

  • Competitive

  • Community-driven

But it still respects the tradition of CrossFit.

Move with control and virtuosity. Sloppy speed leads to no-reps and wasted energy.

If you have a movement concern, communicate with your judge beforehand.

5️⃣ Scoresheets & House Points

Every athlete must:

  • Use a scoresheet

  • Fill it out correctly

  • Submit it after the workout

After finishing:

  • Clear equipment

  • Clean your area

  • Return gear to starting positions

  • Place your sheet in the completed box

No sheet = no participation points.

All divisions are welcome.
Comprehensive scaling and adaptive options are provided by CrossFit.

6️⃣ Stay After Your Heat

Friday Night Lights is not just about the workout.

It’s about:

  • Cheering

  • Hanging around

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Creating moments

The magic happens between heats.

7️⃣ House Colours

If you can, wear your House colours.

Yes, we know navy, grey and black are comfortable.

But colour brings energy.

8️⃣ If You Miss Friday

Every Monday class runs the Open workout.

We treat it as the most important workout of the week, and the year.

Monday format:

  • Two heats

  • Partner judging

If you’ve already completed it Friday and are “one and done,” we provide an alternative workout in the same time domain.

Why We Do It This Way

The Open is CrossFit’s annual fitness assessment.

It’s structured.
It’s measurable.
It’s a marker in time.

And at CrossFit Desire, we choose to do it properly.
