1. What is knee bursitis and what are the symptoms?
Knee bursitis is an inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the bones around the joints. The most common type of knee bursitis occurs at the back of the kneecap (prepatellar bursitis) and causes pain and swelling around the kneecap. Other types of knee bursitis include pes anserine bursitis (which occurs at the inner side of the kneecap) and infrapatellar fat pad syndrome (which occurs under the kneecap).
The symptoms of knee bursitis include pain, swelling, tenderness, warmth, and redness around the affected joint. The pain may get worse with activity or when pressure is placed on the joint, such as when kneeling down or going up and down stairs. You may also notice a buildup of fluid in the affected joint (a condition called effusion).
2. What are the causes of knee bursitis?
There are many possible causes of knee bursitis, including trauma (such as a fall), overuse (from running or jumping), arthritis, gout, or infection (from bacteria entering through a cut in the skin). In some cases, there may be no obvious cause.
3. What are the treatment options for knee bursitis?
Treatment for knee bursitis often includes a combination of rest, ice, physical therapy, medication, or surgery. Resting from activities that put stress on your knees will give them time to heal. Ice can help reduce pain and swelling. Physical therapy exercises can help improve range of motion and strengthen muscles around your knees. Medications such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can help relieve pain and reduce inflammation; however, they should be used only as directed by your doctor because they can cause serious side effects if not used properly. Surgery is rarely needed for this condition but may be recommended in severe cases that don’t respond to other treatments.
Here at Modoma Health we are able to help our patients avoid addictive medications or the stress of needing surgery with our Knee Relief Program.
4. What is recovery from knee bursitis like?
Most people recover from mild to moderate cases of knee bursits within a few weeks with conservative treatment measures such as rest, ice, physical therapy, and medications. Severe cases may take longer to recover from but should still improve with time and appropriate care. We have over an 80% success rate in pain reduction with the Knee Relief Program with many patients reporting relief as soon as their first visit. We utilize what we call the CAM Method to not only provide quick relief but in a regenerative manner for lasting reduced pain or pain free living!
5,. How can you prevent knee bursitis?
There are several things you can do to help prevent episodes of knee bursitis:
Warm up before engaging in activities that put stress on your joints
Wear appropriate shoes that provide support
Avoid sudden changes in activity level
Maintain a healthy weight
Stretch regularly
Take breaks often if your job requires repetitive motions
