Your fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports every muscle—plays a critical role in how your body moves. Over time, stress, injury, repetitive strain, or prolonged immobility can cause this tissue to develop adhesions and restrictions. These limitations can alter movement patterns, reduce range of motion, and perpetuate chronic discomfort.
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), commonly known as muscle scraping, uses specialized tools to detect and address these fascial restrictions with precision. The instruments allow us to assess tissue texture and glide in ways that hands alone cannot fully perceive, helping target areas of densification or scar tissue more effectively.
This approach is not about force or intensity for its own sake. It is controlled, strategic work designed to stimulate circulation, improve tissue mobility, and encourage healthy remodeling of connective tissue. While sessions may feel focused and occasionally intense, they should never cross into harmful or overwhelming discomfort. The goal is release and restoration—not creating new trauma.
Muscle scraping may be especially beneficial for:
• Chronic tension patterns
• Old injuries that never fully resolved
• Scar tissue buildup
• Stubborn knots resistant to traditional massage
• Reduced range of motion
• Postural restrictions
• Overuse injuries
• Athletic recovery and tissue maintenance
By improving blood flow and tissue glide, this work helps restore healthier movement mechanics and reduce recurring irritation.
IASTM is often integrated into therapeutic massage or mobility sessions when tissue calls for a more targeted approach. We assess movement patterns and identify areas where fascial restriction may be contributing to dysfunction before applying tools with specific pressure and direction.
Sessions are always collaborative. Your feedback matters, and intensity is adjusted to support productive release without triggering guarding. When appropriate, muscle scraping may be paired with mobility work or taping to reinforce gains and support continued progress.
Precise. Targeted. Restorative.
