Dr. Leroy Hood co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology in 2000 and served as its first President until 2017.

He is one of only a small number of people worldwide elected to all three U.S. National Academies: Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

With an MD from Johns Hopkins and a PhD from Caltech, he spent 25 years on the Caltech faculty, chaired the Biology Department, and helped develop instruments critical to the Human Genome Project.

His leadership roles have included CTO at NSRI, Director of Biosurveillance and Diagnostics at MRIGlobal, Chief of the Diagnostics, Disease Surveillance, and Threat Detection Division at DTRA, and Principal Professional Staff at Johns Hopkins APL.

He helped develop the Containerized BioContainment System, an R&D 100 award-winning patient transport platform used by the Department of State and Department of Defense during Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks.
