What Is the Automotive refinishing Painting Process?

Painting a vehicle after collision damage requires careful preparation and execution to ensure a seamless finish. The steps involved generally include:

Surface Preparation

Our technicians thoroughly clean the surface of the vehicle and remove any dirt, debris, or old paint. The surface may also need to be sanded or smoothed to create an even canvas for the new paint.

Masking & Taping

Precise masking and taping prevents paint coatings from getting on to areas they don’t belong. Removal of certain components and trim ensures complete paint coverage and protects them from paint overspray. Certain parts of the vehicle, such as windows, trim, and other areas not intended for painting, need to be masked off and taped to protect them from paint overspray.

Priming

Applying a primer is crucial for promoting adhesion between the surface and the paint. It also helps to create a smooth base for the paint to adhere to, as well as preventing issues like corrosion.

Base Coat Application

The base coat is the color layer of paint that gives the vehicle its desired hue. We apply premium-grade automotive paint evenly over the primed surface using spray guns and other equipment.

Clear Coat Application

After the base coat dries, a clear coat is applied to provide protection and add shine to the paint job. Clear coats also help to enhance the color and depth of the base coat.

Blending

In cases where only a portion of the vehicle is repainted, we use blending techniques to seamlessly integrate the new paint with the existing paint. This involves feathering the edges of the exisitng new paint to create a smooth transition.

Curing

Once the paint has been applied, it needs time to cure properly. This typically involves allowing the paint to air dry or baking it in a heated paint booth to accelerate the curing process.

Buffing & Polishing

After the paint has cured, the surface may be buffed and polished to remove any imperfections and achieve a smooth, glossy finish.

Quality Control

Finally, the painted area is inspected to ensure that the color matches the rest of the vehicle and there are no defects or blemishes in the paintwork.

Delivery

Once the repairs and body painting are complete, we will contact you to arrange for the pickup or delivery of your vehicle. You will have the opportunity to inspect the vehicle for yourself, ask questions, and review the work with a technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Collision Repair

Will My Entire Car Need to Be Repainted After a Collision?

As a rule, your entire car will not need to be repainted after a collision. Instead, the focus will be on repairing or replacing individual painted components that were damaged.

The parts of a vehicle that are often damaged in an accident (and often require repainting as a result) include:

. Front bumper

. Rear bumper

. Fenders

. Hood

. Trunk

. Doors

. Quarter panels

. Grille

. Mirror covers

. Frame and structural components

During the initial assessment, we will note areas where the paint on the vehicle has been scratched, chipped, or dented. As experts in automotive refinishing, we will skillfully repair each component and restore it to the desired color.

How Do You Fix Paint After an Accident?

There are two primary methods for fixing vehicle paint after a collision. If the damage is minor, paintless dent repair may be an option. This approach involves carefully manipulating a dent back into place while taking care to preserve the paint. We do not preform Paintless dent removal.

More extensive vehicle damage will require comprehensive body painting services. I-CAR certified technicians at Jakes will sand the damaged surfaces, apply primer, and paint the vehicle with paint that matches the current color scheme. Clear coating helps to protect the new paint job.

How Long Does a Full Body Paint Job Take?

If your vehicle is seriously damaged in a collision, a full body paint job may be necessary. Sufficient time must be allowed for our technicians to (a) repair the damage and (b) paint the vehicle.

We provide customers a “best-assessment” timeline for when collision repairs and automotive refinishing will be complete. This timeline is based on our decades of experience restoring and repairing damaged vehicles, as well as considerations such as:

. The size and type of vehicle

. The extent of painting required

. The complexity of color matching

Our team will provide you with timely updates as we work on the vehicle. You will be kept "in the loop" of our progress and know when to expect repairs and paint work to be complete—whether we are painting individual components or the vehicle as a whole entire vehicle.
