When we first met Philip, we initially thought he was arriving to volunteer rather than use our services. Standing at 6’5” and dressed in khakis and a polo shirt, Philip carried himself with confidence. When he learned about our services and that our nonprofit hires individuals experiencing homelessness to help run our trailer, Philip asked if we were looking for additional team members. As it turned out, we were, and Philip quickly became an amazing addition to our crew.
Philip was raised in Tucson but moved to Phoenix for a fresh start after facing some challenges. Unfortunately, addiction took hold, and he struggled for years. When we met Philip, he had been clean for six months and was committed to staying that way. His radiant smile and exceptional work ethic made him a joy to work with.
Over time, Philip began reconnecting with his family in Tucson. He shared his goal of returning to Tucson, where he had a job and an apartment lined up. However, he needed reliable transportation to make it happen. Hearing this, we provided the remaining funds he needed to purchase a van, helping him take the next step toward his future.
Philip went on to work at a golf course, where his dedication continued to shine. He also found love, marrying his wonderful wife, Danielle. Together, they welcomed a son, Elijah, into their lives.
It’s incredible to see how far Philip has come, and we’re honored to have been part of his journey.
We first met Darryl on a Friday, and during that meeting, he shared some exciting news: he was starting a new job on Monday. However, Darryl needed help finding a pair of shoes in his size. Wearing size 13 shoes wasn’t easy, as he was currently squeezing into a pair of size 11.5. We gave Darryl our number and told him to let us know where he would be on Sunday so we could bring him a new pair. True to our word, we delivered a brand-new pair of Nikes, and Darryl was ready for his first day of work.
Darryl thrived at his new job and often sent us pictures to share his progress. Unfortunately, an old knee injury from high school baseball flared up, causing him to lose his position. We reassured Darryl that once his leg healed, we’d have a job waiting for him.
When Darryl was ready, he joined our team and quickly proved to be a dream employee. However, not long after starting, Darryl received devastating news—he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. We supported him through his treatment, visiting him in the hospital and promising that his job would still be waiting when he recovered.
Darryl fought hard and beat cancer. He returned to work with renewed determination and an inspiring attitude. His work ethic and positive energy soon caught the attention of the owners of La Canasta Capitolio, who recognized his potential. Darryl is now a valued member of their team.
Today, Darryl is thriving. He recently moved into a new apartment near the ballpark, where he enjoys walking to Diamondbacks games. We’re incredibly proud to have been a part of Darryl’s journey and to see him building a bright new future.
