"This camp truly helped me grow"
"I joined Season 4 of Better Steps Life Skills Camp, and it became such a meaningful
experience for me. I learned practical lessons like budgeting and saving, but the
most important thing I discovered was how to communicate with others. Before the camp, I didn’t like to talk at all — I was very shy and often kept to myself. Through the activities and encouragement from the staff and my peers, I slowly found my voice. Now I feel more confident in speaking up and sharing my thoughts. This camp truly helped me grow, and I would love to join again in the upcoming Career Camp with
Better Steps Life Skills."
- Pia (Season 4)

"It helped me take the first steps toward my future"
At camp, I learned the importance of connecting with people. I had the chance to interact with new friends, build relationships, and work as part of a team.
Before, I often felt nervous about making friends, but the camp showed me how much easier it can be when you share activities and goals together. I also began to understand what type of career I might want to pursue. This program gave me confidence and
helped me take the first steps toward my future.
- Christian

"I'm very thankful for everything"
I have been part of the Life Skills Camp from Season 1 through Season 4, and every
year has given me something new and valuable. I learned how to start a business and what it really takes to be an entrepreneur. I gained important business skills that
I know I will use in the future. One of the biggest lessons I took away was about self-advocacy. Speaking up for myself was never easy, but the camp gave me the tools and confidence to do it. The most powerful thing I learned was discovering the career path I want to follow. That knowledge gave me direction and hope for my future. I am truly thankful for everything Better Steps has given me, and I would love to continue joining more camps.
- Jencarlos (Seasons 1 – 4)

Employment plays an important role in independence, confidence, and community inclusion. For many individuals with disabilities, however, entering or staying in the workforce can come with added challenges — from lack of access to accommodations to limited job readiness support.
This is where employment services for individuals with disabilities make a meaningful difference. These services are designed to help individuals prepare for work, secure employment, and succeed long-term through personalized, structured support.
Below, we explain what employment services are, how they work, and why they matter.
Employment services are support programs that assist individuals with disabilities in preparing for, obtaining, and maintaining competitive, integrated employment. These services focus on long-term success rather than quick job placement.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, employment services are person-centered, meaning they are tailored to each individual’s strengths, interests, goals, and support needs.
Employment services support individuals across different stages of life, including:
Adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities
Individuals with physical or sensory disabilities
Young adults transitioning from school to work
Individuals returning to work after long gaps
Those who need ongoing job coaching or workplace support
These services are especially beneficial for individuals who want to work but need guidance, structure, or accommodations to succeed.
Employment services are typically provided in stages. Each person’s journey may look different, depending on their goals and needs.
Before job placement, individuals often receive support with:
Understanding workplace expectations
Communication and professionalism
Time management and attendance
Resume development
Interview preparation
This phase helps individuals feel prepared, confident, and ready to enter the workforce.
Employment services help individuals identify:
Interests and strengths
Skills and abilities
Preferred work environments
Long-term career goals
This ensures employment opportunities align with the individual, rather than placing them in roles that may not be a good fit.
Once goals are identified, employment specialists assist with:
Job searches and applications
Interview coordination
Employer matching
Workplace introductions
The focus is on competitive, integrated employment, where individuals earn fair wages and work in inclusive environments.
Job coaching is a core part of employment services. Coaches provide hands-on support to help individuals:
Learn job tasks
Adjust to routines and expectations
Communicate with supervisors and coworkers
Address challenges as they arise
Support is gradually reduced as independence and confidence grow.
Employment success does not stop after placement. Ongoing support helps individuals:
Maintain employment
Navigate changes in the workplace
Build confidence over time
Address challenges before they become barriers
This continued support is essential for long-term job retention and career growth.
Supported employment is a model within employment services that provides ongoing assistance for individuals who may need long-term support to succeed at work.
This may include:
Continued job coaching
Collaboration with employers
Use of natural supports in the workplace
Ongoing skill development
The goal is to promote independence while ensuring the individual feels supported.
Competitive integrated employment means individuals:
Earn wages comparable to coworkers without disabilities
Work in inclusive, community-based settings
Have opportunities for advancement
Are valued members of the workforce
Employment services aim to help individuals access meaningful, fairly paid jobs where inclusion is the standard.
Employment services help remove barriers that often prevent individuals with disabilities from achieving stable employment.
Key benefits include:
Increased independence and confidence
Improved financial stability
Stronger social connections
Reduced isolation
Greater community inclusion
These services help individuals build careers — not just find jobs.
Employment services also support families and caregivers by:
Reducing stress and uncertainty
Providing clear pathways to employment
Offering professional guidance and structure
Supporting long-term planning
Families are often key partners in the employment journey, and strong programs work collaboratively with them.
Employment is about more than earning a paycheck — it’s about confidence, purpose, and belonging. With the right support, individuals with disabilities can build meaningful careers and long-term success.
If you or a loved one are exploring employment options, employment services can provide the guidance and encouragement needed to move forward — one step at a time.
